Default UAL ALPA newspaper ad

The professional pilots of United Airlines would like to apologize to the traveling
public for United Airlines’ def iciencies during this Holiday Season.
The pilots of United Airlines sympathize with our travelers’ plights earlier this week.
Many of our pilots did not make it home to share the holidays with their loved ones
either. United may blame this week’s flight cancellations on poor weather in the
Midwest, but, as most of our competitors demonstrated, the real culprit was United’s
lack of manpower – attempting to fly more with fewer employees – all at your
expense. United has been an all-weather airline for more than 80 years. We
pioneered many of the safety innovations such as onboard weather radar, anti-skid
brakes, better weather forecasting and improved navigation instruments that allow
operation in inclement weather all over the world. Until recently, we have been able
to eff iciently handle weather events in the Midwest and throughout the world without
major disruptions.
Over the last few years, however, United has had to endure a management team that is
bent on personal prof it over customer service. They have pared employee staff ing to
the bare minimum, making them unable to respond to even well-anticipated weather
events. Many of our pilots work to the FAA maximum limits every month, all year
long. We have repeatedly warned United’s management that they do not have the
crew resources to staff our airline adequately and have repeatedly asked them to
discuss these shortcomings. So far they have declined to do so. Instead, they diverted
$750 million of cash payouts so that they may receive personal stock dividends of
$2,196,165. The top f ive United off icers received a combined salary between
$65,983,879 and $100,850,809 in 2006. We believe your holiday travel experiences
would have been much better this week if they had used that money on the airline
instead of on themselves.
United Airlines is our livelihood and our source of pride. We are here for the duration
and we are here for you. We are disappointed in the way you, our valued customers,
were treated by United’s management. You deserve better from a world-class airline.
Signed,
The Pilots of United Airlines

It wasn't an article, it was actually an advertisment the pilots put in the paper. Its sad to see pilots having to do that.

Here's to US ALPA, thanks for sticking up for your pilots!

and now this..............figures, I'd say it's a jump ball.......

Much has been written about United's operational
performance during the holiday season, most of which
missed the facts, which I would like to share.

"We operate under two guiding principles: safety and
taking care of customers, and we make our operating
decisions during extreme weather conditions based on
how we can safely get our customers to their
destination while minimizing inconvenience to them.

"That is exactly what we did this past week and
throughout the month. This was the most challenging
December in United's history, with delays from weather
and air-traffic control issues more than double those
of our competitors. United was uniquely impacted by
the weather as our two largest airports, O'Hare and
Denver International -- where two out of every three
domestic United flights begin or end -- dramatically
reduced the number of arrivals they could accept
because of the weather. Ground delay programs,
prompted by weather, made these two airports among the
three worst performing airports in the country
measured by on-time arrivals.

"We decided to run our operation late in the evening
in the days leading up to the holiday to get our
customers where they were headed for Christmas, opting
to cancel flights later in the week when fewer people
were traveling, and we had better opportunities to get
customers on other United or competitor flights. We
know travel plans for some of our customers were
disrupted as we worked to recover our operations, and
we thank them for their patience and sincerely
apologize for any inconvenience they may have
encountered.

"Contrary to what some have suggested, the fact is
that we have better pilot staffing levels than we have
had in recent years. We have 115 more pilots this year
than we did last December, and we have less domestic
flying. For flying overall, this nets out to a 2%
increase in pilots together with a 1.5% decrease in
flying hours versus last year.

"Given the facts regarding the weather impact on
Denver and Chicago and the actual increase in United
pilots, it is disingenuous for ALPA to suggest
disruptions to the schedule were caused by pilot
shortage; such a blatant disregard for the truth is
disrespectful of our employees who worked tirelessly
to meet the needs of our customers in what has been an
extraordinarily difficult month.

"ALPA further distorts the facts on our recently
announced special distribution of $250 million to
shareholders, which includes our employee stockholders
who will receive $20 million in January, and follows
the paydown of an additional $500 million in debt,
which strengthens our financial position.

"Perhaps the most important fact, though, missed in
coverage of our operations is the extraordinary job by
our employees getting our customers safely to their
destinations. We are extremely proud of their work,
and our commitment to our customers."

and now this posted by "767guy" on the cargo board..............

{UAL SHARES FALL}
Shares of United parent company UAL Corp fell 5.9% Monday after industry analyst James Higgins of Soleil Securities Group said there is “rising evidence” that actions by pilots contributed to the carrier’s bad December in which it had double the industry average number of delays. Higgins downgraded the company, citing labor discord he said includes pilots calling in sick and working the minimum number of hours required. He says United pilots are upset with management over excessive pay for the company’s top managers after they were forced to take big pay cuts during bankruptcy proceedings. "The pilots' anger is manifesting itself in several ways," he said in a report to investors. "Most notable is a perfectly legal refusal to accept flying beyond amounts specified in their contract. We also believe UAL is facing increasing pilot sick calls, among other actions that hurt operations and earnings."
