Application question
In most of the online applications there is a line that reads "As a Flight Instructor, have you had any students who, while under your instruction, were investigated by the FAA or the military?" I wanted to know how most people take this to read. I had a student who damaged a plane while soloing, and the FAA did an investigation. They found that the student was properly trained, but failed to act appropriatly. Do you think I should answer this question yes or no, The student was not under my direct instruction at the time, but was soloing on my certificate as it were.

I would answer yes, and provide a detailed explanation always refering to the FAA findings. If the FAA sees you as not responsible, then you have nothing to hide. I dont think you would want the airline to find out otherwise and possibly terminate you. But thats just my opinion. Make sure you again and again point out the fact that the FAA does NOT find you responsible. Again, other people on here might say something different....take it for what its worth.

I agree with jetjock87. You have nothing to hide. You should just make it clear that the individual was a student of yours that was on a solo flight and the FAA did not find you responsible. I personally believe that most air carriers when looking to hire an applicant are looking to see if you are going to lie. To get back to your question…I interpret this in two parts. If your student was a private pilot seeking a higher certificate, than the student is not under your instruction when he/she is the sole occupant of the aircraft. However, a student pilot is always under the instruction of their CFI when the CFI’s signature is on the back of the medical.
