Southwest Airlines expected to expand Denver flights

DENVER — Southwest Airlines has scheduled a news conference for Wednesday and is expected to announce an expansion of its Denver service.

Chief Executive Officer Gary Kelly will be joined for the announcement by Mayor John Hickenlooper. Southwest spokeswoman Marilee McInnis declined additional comment Tuesday.

The airline said Denver is one of its fastest-growing cities with 56 daily flights, up from 13 when it launched service in January 2006 at Denver International Airport.

Dallas-based Southwest competes with United and Frontier airlines at DIA, an aggressive battle which has benefited customers by forcing lower fares.

Do you seriously think SW will ever fly out of the busiest airport in the US?

Not with the current airlines that are there. If someone turns out to be bought, or Delta merges with NWA, then maybe.

Does anyone within SWA really see them buying Air Tran?

For cultual reasons, SWA can expand very fast by hiring / choosing their employees verses converting Air Tran culture.

Equipment: SWA already had slowed down deliveries and could ramp them back up (only a guess).

Economic: Air Tran rents the gates from the airport... that means no gate grab.

Am I missing something about this rumor?

Thanks y'all.

F9 guys... were all thinking that WN is going to buy F9 to get the gates. Trade/sell the busses to Mexicana in exchange for their 73's... Then staple the pilots. I guess it's wishful thinking and hope. The reality is, F9 is going down. You ask are we nervous? Are you kidding! There is talk of chopping 10 aircraft and +/- 1000 employee layoff. Everyone here is freaking out. I'm scrambling for another job & by the time I get one... Another home on the increasing 4 billion dollar foreclosure list & another perfect credit score ruined. :(

I don't know the details of the leases but I do know that in most cases, if you buy the company you buy the leases.
