SWA uses an amazingly long double jetbridge in ALB Albany, NY

Back in the day...before I got furloughed from United and before they did away with the Shuttle, we did off load through front and rear doors a few times. Don't recall which airports. I off loaded an Alaska MD-80 through the rear once up in Seattle...the FA announced certain seat positions would go aft while the others would go forward. Worked fairly well.

Rear Stair unloading
 
I recall going down rear stairs, onto the tarmac, and then up stairs into gate 79 at SFO (This was in August 2001 off a Shuttle By United flight). But to me that is a horrible idea because:
A) You need to carry all your bags down the jetway stairs
B) You need to walk across the tarmac at an airport (safety?)
C) You need to climb back up the stairs into the terminal

A double jetway is much more logical.

With regards to the safety/weather/convienence issue of airstairs--seems to work pretty well for Ryanair and Easyjet. The UK and Ireland are as cold and wet as any US destination. If the engines aren't running, whats the safety issue? Finally, maybe if more US passengers were forced to drag their oh-so-heavy carry-on luggage up and down a flight of stairs each time they flew, there would be fewer of them that would have to purchase two seats due to obesity. Are we so obsessed with convienence these days that the most elegant and effective soultion is passed on so people dont have to spend 3 minutes outside?

In LGB, jetBlue uses airstairs front and back. The airport is listed as a registered historic landmark by either the state or the city and even when they build the new terminal they are planning they won't be using any jetways just airstairs. Some customers are in shock when they arrive from NYC and walk forward and see the stairs. People even seem to have lost the feeling that they are actually going in an airplane. They go from a terminal to a tube onto a carrier and deplane the same way without ever thinking they
are moving across the country on an airplane. Kinda like they are just going into an elevator or some sort of "transporter device", Cracks me up!
