Default Alaska Air hiring question

Looking for advice!! I'm 35 and live in Dallas and enjoy my charter job! BUT...
Here's my scenario....I'm a 135 charter B200 King Air driver that has 200 pic turbine and soon to be "captained" so I can log pic alot quicker (about 350-400hrs/year). Question is in the end if I had 1000-1500 pic turbine in a B200 and maybe a 737 type, would Alaska Air interview me/consider me a competitive candidate??? I've heard different points of view about king air time. Option 2: should I just go to a regional (I like Horizon) and do my time?? At least from the pay, Horizon has career potential! Any ideas?...any Alaska guys out there..?

horizon has a long upgrade time as much as 7 years right now. it could change but i think if you go the regional route there are better options. if you are looking for a northwest base go with skywest.

i dont know who alaska looks at but it wouldnt hurt to send in a resume when you have the minimums. if you like your job now and make good money dont hesitate to keep it either. just wait and see what things look like when you come to that point.

Horizon is a solid place to work. Many people have made it a career and that's one reason upgrades take a long time. In my years there I saw no particular advantage to getting on with Alaska. There's a feeling that QX salaries will not stay at present levels. As you probably know, AS took a big cut in the last year and there will be pressure to do the same at Horizon when the contract is up--which I think is soon.

I've heard Skywest is not hiring, but don't take my word for it, there's some threads about that on the forum.

Hope some Alaska guys respond to your question--they would have the best info.

Best of luck, AS was my dream job once upon a time. I make more money where I am now, but I understand the dream.

Default Alaska Hiring

Texas Dude,

The only thing that matters at Alaska Airlines or any other airline for that matter is who you know. Your time could be in a King Air or the space shuttle and it wouldn't matter unless you had someone significant (senior captain or well liked FO)that is pulling for you on the inside. Alaska hasn't hired for a long time so it might take a few years for all the friends, family and military superstars to get hired that have been backlogged for a long time now. If you don't know anyone there then attend a few Job Fairs and politely pester the HR girls. They are young and tend to like single guys more. It can take sometime to work an interview out of them and whatever you do stay away from Horizon Air. Alaska claims to be in favor of hiring Horizon guys but they hire Skywest three to one over Horizon. I would avoid getting a 737 type. Alaska has a low self image and is always afraid that you will use them to get on with another company. If they see a 737 type they will think that your true aim is to get on with SWA. Watching the judge Aleto confirmation hearings reminds me of my Alaska interviews.

Default Alaska/Horizon

Thanks for the comical advice!! I do agree with everything you suggested. I just might have to stick w/ the King and grind out a few years. Ex employee of SWA so guess in the meantime I should bust out with redeveloping my connections there. I think it really is who you know so maybe a little KingAir guy with 1000pic and a type might get in some day. So you work for?....

I have a good friend that interviewed with Alaska Airlines yesterday (1/11/06) and said his interview was cordial, relaxed, and comfortable. Apparently, not all interviews at Alaska are so painful. When did you interview?

Default Alaska Interview

HSLD,

I interviewed there two times once in 2000 and another time in 2002. It was in a room full of people asking me a barrage of questions. The Alito hearings brought flash backs. I also interviewed there another time but it was to be a baggage handler. The experience was similar. Most who make it to the interview room have already been accepted. Both times I thought I had it made but fate had other plans.

lnelson3,

My last real gig was as a 757 FO for National Airlines. They shut down over three years ago now. Since then I have been shaking trees to no avail. My only dream was to fly for Alaska Airlines but I guess I am blacklisted so since National I have mainly been working construction.

Would yer friend be so kind as to regurgitate any of the details he got about their current hiring scheme? ie background/experience of new hires, what they consider competitive flying time, future hiring forecasts, if Horizon guys have any flow throughs or preferential handling!! Thanks, Louis (texas dude)

When I left Horizon 8 years ago there was no flow through. I haven't heard of any changes since. At that time there was no preference for Horizon pilots except that we didn't have to pay the application fee. The majority of new hire pilots at Alaska came from elsewhere. So I would have said there was no advantage to being at Horizon if you wanted to fly for Alaska. This is pretty old information though, perhaps a current QX/AS person could confirm/deny?
