Pittsburgh, Great Airport - Sad Story

I loved KPIT. It's a shame that an upstart doesn't jump in there.

Yens need non-stop airline service.

Do any ex - Mesa crews remember JO's #^& attempt to start narrow bodies out of KPIT.

Still remember the 32 circle to 28 left fondly.........

I flew my first trip there the other day and was amazed. That has to be one of the most baren airports I have seen in a while. Of all the terminal space there was probably us and 4 other 121 operators. It was snowing at a good clip there and as I watched a convoy of plows running all over racking up a multi thousand dollar plowing bill it was just a shame knowing that it was all for a handfull of ac.

Allegheny county refuses to relax the insane gate fees, until that happens no one will likely start up a major operation out of PIT. Within the past month or two, they have physically reduced the sized of the terminal by installing temporary walls toward the end of the concourses.

Late 90's and early 2000's that airport rocked!

I used to love the visual 32 circle to 28L, talk about scaring the crap out of the pax...legally! I remember not being able to walk down the E con without pushing people aside it was so packed in there. Also remember flying the day USAir retired the last DC-9 - water cannons and everything. Hell, I even used to non-rev to London out of PIT - that airport ran great all year round, even in the winter. Can't think of a harder working group of people and better airport setup than PIT. I agree, it's so sad what's happened to that place.

And now the airport authority has lowered fees....a little late.

Does anyone remember the old terminal? I was just a tyke, but still fondly remember the art-deco style and watching the classic airlines come and go. Flew Allegheny and the old US Air a lot out of there.

That's where I grew up and seeing all those USAir jets is what made me want to be a pilot in the first place. Man, is it even still Class B airspace? How long before it's back down to C?

yep... im from south of KPIT and have always loved flying out of that airport... I remember when it was built when I was a kid. I even remember the old airport just down the road.

I was so sad when USair announced that they would no longer be the main carrier there. I hope the airport is revived somehow, sadly I doubt it will happen.

PIT is a neat airport. However they pulled the same bonhead move that STL did with AA. They failed to realize that there are plenty of other airports vying for traffic. When US went to them and said they wanted them to lower fees, they balked. As a result, US yanked out and now it's an airport built to be a mega hub with a few flights from every airline. The result is lots of gate space, and a very empty terminal.
