CAL Domiciles
A while back, I remember a thread about possible additional domiciles at CAL. Anything new with this? Is IAH still a much more senior base than EWR? How about CLE? Also, how do moves to and from Guam work? Paid? Any amount of time you are locked into Guam if you go?
Tahnk you! |
No new bases. Rumors about bases for last 20 years. Guam is a paid move ONLY if you stay there for a period of time (two years I think). IAH and CLE are more senior. CLE because it is small. IAH because it's cheaper to live there. EWR has the best flying. You don't have to live in Newark to fly out of EWR. :)

I sat one mos reserve in EWR and then held a line. I just got to IAH and will sit 3 mos (maybe more) reserves before I will hold a line. I live in Texas so IAH was the move for me but if you live close to EWR, you will have a better QOL earlier for sure. I didn't like the 2 leg commute to EWR but the people and flying was good. If you can do a 1 leg commute on our mainline you will do better with space and jumpseat than flying a commuter.
Hope this helps. |
When you're sitting reserves for 3 mos like you mentioned, is it the long-call or short-call reserve? Do you get a choice? Sitting long-call with a fishing rod in my hand sounds great; hanging out in a crashpad in Houston does not...

You bid for long or short call. I am B for this month but will bid and should hold A next month since I don't live in IAH and can sit A from home. Long call-A reserves get a 9 hr call out but are the first to get assigned a trip. B reserves get a 2 hr call out and may not get used. Great if you live in base with B reserves. Also, as an A reserves you get to pick up a trip in open time before the B guys do if you see a trip that you really want. A reserves get a 72 hour pay guarantee and B gets 76 hrs. By 1500 the day before, you will know if you are assigned a trip for the next day or not.

How are trips assigned while on reserve?
|
A (long call first) then B, in reverse seniority order (most junior guy first). Also it depends on the amount of days you are available on reserve and the number of days the trip is. If you're good for only one more day, they will not give you a four-day trip!

If you call skds and show them that you are really interested in picking up any trip, they can sometimes "find" a trip for you. Beats sitting in a crashpad in EWR and makes the days go by. However, sometimes you can get a red eye or out/in trip right back to EWR. This defeats the purpose a little. You can always just go for a run or workout and watch TV too while getting paid.
