Allegiant Air?
 

Hello everyone,
This is my first post. I was referred to this site from a Pilot @ Tri-Cities airport.
I have a flight scheduled on Allegiant on the 12th of this month from Tri-FLL. I have flown 3 times in my life and to be very honest, flying scares the crap out of me.
I went to a fear of flying resource (Captn. Tom Bunn) with SOAR and asked for advice. His words were "I would not fly on Allegiant, nor allow my children to fly on them". Obviously this has made my fear even worse.
Captn. Tom claims to have email records of shoddy maintenance work sent to him from a former Allegiant pilot who he claims was fired for refusing to fly an "unsafe" plane.
So, before I put my life, and the life of my new bride on the line, does anyone have any tips for me? Especially any Allegiant pilots out there?
In the back of my mind I'm wondering if what he said is true?

Knowing a lot of people from that website, don't believe it all. Tom is a very knowledgeable person, but is very outspoken on unions and outsourcing. His arguments don't hold much weight in todays world. When he was flying some of his ideas were true, but not much anymore. Allegiant has a good safety record and will get you to FLL and back safely.

Flame?

I dont work for Allegiant, but not heard of them with maintance problems or any crash record or incedent. Hell, SWA was just in the news about their planes and maintance, would Cpt. Tom fly on them?

Yes, it is. I'm sorry if I offended you. This just scared the heck out of me and I wanted to get input from pilots.

The "Flame?" question is a direct question as to whether or not you are asking an honest and serious question or whether you are trying to ingnite some petty argument about airline safety.

I don't know who this Capt. Bunn is but anyone offering advice to someone with a fear of flying that makes them more terrified of taking to the skies is doing a great dis-service to the public. US airlines are highly regulated, extreemly standardized, have top notch maintainers and very skilled operators. Yes, some corners can get cut in the name of cost savings, but no airline can afford to place the lives of their customers in danger. Even the most conservative and apparently safe airline can have an accident. Just remember, you are more safe in the back of an US airline airplane than driving down the highway at any time of the day.

If there are any airlines to stay clear of they come from Cuba, central Africa, and any central asian country starting with K and ending in stan.

Don't worry!!! you are looking for advice. If you are not sure to fly with them, then don't. But accidents, rare as they can be, they can happen anytime anywhere and with any airline!!!

Do more research!!! get piece of mind and then decided. Best Jet320;)

No MD-80's at SWA. Only operate B-737's.

Unfortunately, you have been completely misinformed. I am a pilot for Allegiant Air. We fly MD-80s. Southwest Airlines flies Boeing 737s. The two are airplanes completely different.
Allegiant has an excellent safety record and I haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary with maintenance, and certainly not anything illegal. If something does need maintenance, it is promptly written up by the pilots and fixed by our mechanics. It sounds like your contact gave you some very bad information.
Considering all the MD-80 inspections that caused flight cancellations by American and Delta Airlines, and the fact that all of our airplanes already had the inspections completed, I feel safe flying on Allegiant and so should you.
