what's with all the ill will on these forums... I can't believe how much we all play into the hands of airline executives with this "My airline is better than yours" attitude.. Funny how when we're all out there in the great ATC space we seem to sometimes go out of our way to be nice to each other, and yield rights of way, and such.... get on a message board and it's all of a sudden war. Give me a break! AT THE SAME TIME, what you put into it is often what you get out of it. I'm a firm believer in this. Go ahead and put your negative energy out into the universe and see what you get back. Go ahead and wish damnation on your fellow aviator, American comrad, and fellow family man. Maybe if his airline goes down your bottom line will go up. Nevermind that his wife just came down with cancer or he has a baby on the way. He's the idiot who decided to fly for those Scabs anyway, right? I'm a rookie to this Part 121 world, but it's like any other place that employs beings that breath in the oxygen. Truth is I know a little about psychology and I know we gravitate towards what makes us feel better about ourselves. But at the expense of others? Come on! AMEN...This is the exact reason I hardly ever post. CE750 definitely has a stiffer backbone than I do to accept all the flames he gets. Personally, if I wanted to get involved in DRAMA I would just go turn on MTV, watch reality TV or visit my local high school cafeteria. Sometimes I think there would be less drama in an FA message board! When I grew up I was exposed to the romance of flying planes, the beauty of exploring new landscapes and territories, and having the opportunity to do what very few men (and women) were able to do in the history of man. Well...life can have it's harsh reality checks and when you grow up it ain't always what you imagined.

I'm not the one on here professing Mesa's assured longevity in the industry, nor and I blowing smoke up everyone's rear end. If that's talking crap then fine. I'm just calling it like I see it, and I don't see VA succeeding. |

Anyone know how the financing was structured for VA to get around the foreign ownership laws? Is Sir Richard a "consultant" and minority shareholder?

In case you missed it, there was a very hard fought DOT investigation on this very subject. The result is a 77% US owned airline with the foreign investment in a blind trust. It passed the sniff test with an army of lawyers from CAL, DAL, UAL and the DOT. The docket is mostly public and can be found at dot.gov. Virgin Group (UK) is the minority investor. |
I wish the guys at VA all the luck in the world, but I just don't think the airline is going to survive.
They offer a great product with new airplanes and good service, but they do it for not enough money. The problem is that these "perks" cost lots of money and they can't charge high enough airfares to compensate for the added costs. If they charged fees for each of their onboard ammenities, it would help them out tremendously. Express Jet adopted a similar business model when they started their branded service. They offered meals, drinks, and beer for little or no cost; meanwhile, their expenses were mounting...the result is an airline struggling to survive. It is basic economics, not rocket science. If you can't make a profit on airfares alone, you're going to have to add additional streams of income. Additionally, if you have a lot of expenses, you need to find ways to cut your costs. Nothing they're doing cuts costs nor adds income. -The new airplanes cost them lots of money -The onboard entertainment cost them money -The onboard services cost them money -Meals, drinks, and flat screen monitors add weight and cost money. -Servicing large airports cost them lots of money -Flying long routes burns fuel and costs tons of money **Offering low fares won't make up for all of their expenses. |

And to all those who are foolish enough to predict doom for Virgin America, please step outside US and go and fly for some world class carriers, only than you will know what Virgin America is all about;) |
Well said. It would be interesting to see VA go the Pacific route with A330/340's. Their product would work well internationally.
