In case you didn't get it, JetBlue is backing out of the LAX expansion slated to begin later this month. Dear Crewmembers, Today we announced our decision to suspend the start-up of service to Los Angeles International Airport. We had originally planned to begin LAX-JFK and LAX-BOS May 21, but the actual decision to start serving LAX was made last December, when fuel was $2.72 per gallon. Since then, fuel has gone up 78 cents, to $3.50 per gallon. As a new market, it is vital that we attract new Customers through low fares. Even with fuel at $2.72, we had a solid marketing plan and we were willing to invest in this route for the first year in order to establish market presence and send all airlines flying in this corridor a clear message that JetBlue is the airline of choice for Southern California Customers. |
I always thought LGB is a much better airport for folks living in LA.

Actually, in a later portion of that message Barger talked about securing, "two seasonal slots" whatever that means... Barger and Co. have been trying to crack the rules at LGB (i.e trying to get the E90 to use Commuter slots) seems unlikely considering SkyWest is seeing trouble getting the 75,250LB CR7 in under the 75k MTOW limit. At least that's the rumor I heard today, take it with a grain. |
Our fuel bill for LAX to EWR is running around $14,500 for a B737-800 (more going the opposite direction). Flight plan showed it at $3.63 a gallon a couple of days ago. :(

I had a jetBlue flight booked from BOS to LAX in June. I called customer service today; they gave me a full refund plus a $50 voucher for future travel.

In order to grow at LGB right now I think JetBlue will need to bite the bullet and use ExpressJet's XM radio ERJ-145's out of LGB for them as a feeder/codeshare. I just don't see the city of Long Beach relaxing those slot rules. Especially with the GA at LGB fighting it at every step. I would normally say its good to keep your flying in-house, but unless Jetblue gets some airplanes under 75,000 lbs. why not make some extra money for themselves this way.

JetBlue flies the A320 from LGB to BOS, the only Embraer product they operate is the E190. |
