Question for AA guys

Hey guys, I'm looking to fly to South America and my only option is AA out of MIA. AA doesn't let me list for the jumpseat, so I have to buy a ZED fare. Now because the season, the flights are oversold and looking at the open seats, coach is completely full (every day of the season) and Business is wide open. Apparently there's no such a thing as business ZED fare, or pay more and get business.

I was wondering, is there any chance I can get a zed fare and talk to the captain and see if he would let me seat in Business given that coach is full? Honeslty I don't see AA gate agents doing this (I might be wrong).

Any ideas?

Who do you work for and where do you want to go? There might be other options.

Yowzers that's a tough one. I think it's definitely worth a shot but it's my understanding that most of our captains wouldn't even know if they have the authority to do that. In any case, your situation would have to rest with the gate agents anyway because when you're on a ZED fare, you have to be accounted for in the cabin - and therefore, the agent has to be the one to assign you a seat. Like you said, ZED fares do not exist for premium cabins, they are only based on the lowest unrestricted coach prices (I think.)

At the very least, buy the ZED fare and give it a shot. Weirder things have happened, maybe you'll get a really cool agent and/or F/As who will work with you. (it's been rarely known to happen at AA...) Good luck.

Thanx, I think I'll give it a shot. I don't know why AA is so hard with the jumpseaters. They should have the same policy for domestic and international JS. (with the expemption of riding in the cockpit off-course)
They should let any CASS JS to list on international flights. But oh well......

out of complete ignorance, why cant you ride in the j/s? are you cass?

Number 1: No International CASS yet. It's coming.

Number 2: AA only lets a select few airlines jumpseat international, even if there are seats in the back of the airplane. ****es me off every day of my life.

I agree, and I brought it up when I flew a trip with our j/s chairman last month. He's tried every which way to open up the int'l j/s.... no go. Our mgt has always played hardball with us regarding the jumpseat and they would probably demand something outrageous from our contract in exchange. I promise you it is not a pilot's issue, it is our management. We can only keep trying... in the meantime, I hope your trip works out. Good luck.

If there are seats left you will get on.
They would either upgrade a full fare pax or give you a business class seat.

aa73,

Good info/good post. To get something means you have to give up something. To me, anytime the union, any union, approaches management wanting something, it lights up a red light to management saying that, "the union must really want this or they wouldn't have approached us, let's exchange, more jumpseat access to OALs in exchange have them give up per diem on all flights"...or some other off-base retort.

Hopefully, less greedy managers will prevail...but I think we all know better.
