A few folks have slipped through in the past, but only accidently (or by being injured while on active duty). This is NOT a realistic option in the nav. Don't know about the other branches, maybe the ANG is OK with it.
As to the original question, yes stay in for 20.

The NAvy Reserve doesn't "Forbid" going on active duty, it just requires a waiver if you go into "sanctuary" - over 18 years cum. active duty - AD/Mob./ADSW. They are not often approved, but not impossible. My reserve unit CMC got on 1 year mobilization orders to a CENTCOM unit that puts him into sactuary, thus he can stay until 20 and receive AD retirement. My guess is that for the Navy, you probably need to take orders over to somewhere in Sand-Land to get approval. I have a friend in the Guard who is on orders here at home that gets him his active 20 - seems to be an easier waiver for them.
By the way, VADM Cotton, Chief of Navy Reserve - ex Eastern, now AA pilot on Mil Leave, is on an active recall that puts him into sanctuary. Guess he signed his own waiver...
Also to the original question. Move up not out dude - get the active 20, you'll figure out a way to stay current for your last set of orders.

What I have a hard time realizing now is that they all got on with United, Delta, and American, and they are either barely hanging on or are furloughed now. You are right. Nothing is for certain. Who would have thought the big three would be where they are today? And it is naïve on my part to think that a similar shift couldn’t happen to the current strong companies. I am going to continue to think about it, but I appreciate you guys weighing in on the subject. In the end, choosing between flying and flying still beats sitting in a cubicle or flipping burgers. And I’m sure we were all only a couple of bad choices away from that route at one time in our lives.

I was in the same boat. Made Major and told I was going to HQMC. I did the math and there was no other choice for me but to get out. It was $100's of thousands difference! FedEx loves guys like you. I have been here ten years now. Finished up my military in the reserves FLYING not behind a desk. I will have military pension at 60 which with as much time active duty we have is a sizeable amount and the Tri-care medical at 60 which is also huge. Good luck, call your buddies at FedEx and UPS and have them get to work lining up an interview for you. I know what you are going through.
