NWA DC-9 had multiple problems yesterday at MKE
MILWAUKEE -- Passengers had to live through some tense moments onboard a Northwest Airlines flight Monday as pilots had to make an emergency landing. Northwest Flight 796 left Milwaukee headed to Minneapolis at about 6 p.m., but shortly after take-off, an engine failed and a tire blew, so the plane, filled with 119 passengers had to come back about 45 minutes later. The plane made a safe landing and no one was injured and the passengers were put on other flights.
They said the incident was unnerving but everyone remained calm.
“Really not as much commotion as I thought here would be. A few people were tense, I know I was,” passenger Steven Westmoreland said.
Northwest representatives said the incident is under investigation.

American DC-9-80 in LGA, NWA DC-9-50 in MKE...seems that the DC-9 is the best single engine jet flying

Some day we might be able to test the durability of a 40 year old A-320... Doubtful though because I don't think plastic has the same useful life

I was told by multiple airport ops and police that the NWA bird had an engine failure along with the tire blow out. I can't imagine why the DC-9 would have sat out on the taxiway for over 4hrs with fire crews the entire time for just a tire blow out. As of yesterday, the DC-9 was at the Midwest hanger ramp.

Well no, however it would not have taken long to replace a tire or two. Though all the tires appeared to have been intact and worked fine when the airplane landed. I was standing about 300ft, a beam the touchdown point, and saw all the tires. I've seen blown out airliner tires before and none of them appeared to be scratched.
