Unemployment type rating
 

Hello all,
I've heard this rumor around the industry and just thought I would post it here. Now, being furloughed from Trans States, I would usually post this thread in the regional forum but I figured you guys would know a little more about getting a 737/lear type.

Just before I was furloughed, some guys have told me that unemployment insurance would pay for a type rating. I really know nothing about any of this so if somebody would drop some insight my way that would be great.

Do you already need to have an ATP before taking these type rides or can everything be done at once? Just thinking out loud in case I'm a furloughed F/O soon.

All PIC type rides are to ATP standards so if you qualify hours-wise for the ATP and have your written, your Type Checkride will double as your ATP checkride.

It's called the Workforce Investment Act of 1978 (WIA). I've been furloughed twice and got two types out of the program. I got my ATP through the second type rating school.

The best way to go about who has the funds is to contacts the schools themselves and ask what employment office to apply for the funds. Start there and they should lead you in the right direction. There are limited funds depending on the county you go through. I got $8,000 for my type and $15,000 for my Lear 35; two different states.

If you plan on getting your 737 type, I highly recommend Higher Power Aviation in Dallas. The best traing I've had!!!

Aeroservices in Miami is not so good, but they can get you 757/767 and some other things that usually the WIA doesn't normally aprove.

Anybody know if they'll pay for a corporate jet type? In todays job market a Citation type is probably more valuable then one in a 73 (which I already have).

Correct, as far as job prospects, a Citation X, Citation Excel or Falcon 2000 type rating would be better than an airliner.

Now if you really want to reap the benefits of this free type-rating thing, then go for the grand daddy of them all, the infamous $55,000 G-550 type. But G-550 gigs are extremely hard to get, guys who fly those things don't leave their jobs until they die.

Having just a 61.157 type rating with no actual time in the airplane won't get you very far. It might look good on your certificate but that is about it.

That is completely false. Think about it...if you were a chief pilot looking for, say, a Hawker 800 crew, would you hire someone that you didnt have to send to school for 20k or someone that you did? In this economic environment finding savings like that is extremely beneficial.

A type rating can be advantageous flying overseas !! let your spirit of adventure kick in and you will soon realise there is a big world outside the US. Good luck !!
