Southwest Reports Net Loss Due to Fuel Hedges

Let's see a bar graph of airline CEO salaries. Where do you think GK would fall?

Fuel Hedging is a double edge sword.
As for those people who say the playing field is now level, you seem to have tunnel vision. Fuel hedging was an advantage, but not the only one. SWA still enjoys having one of the lowest CASM in the industry.

This CAN'T be true. SWA will NEVER lose money according to some on this forum.............. Welcome to the party guys.............
And NO, I don't hate SWA.... I have a lot of good friends there. It's just that many thought this day would never come.....and low and behold, it did. (At least the numbers aren't that bad....yet). Kinda like getting sucker punched, isn't it?

...The legendary Southwest advantage over all other airlines is evaporating fast.
SWA allegedly has huge hedge positions far into the future. Way more than other companies. That seemed like pure genius up until a month ago. If the collapse of oil prices continues, it could quickly become a serious problem....

Disclaimer: Am a UPS pony express slug. Oil can blast off again. Seems many detractors assume that low oil will remain permanent, who knows<g>

To paraphrase Mark Twain, "Stories of Southwest’s demise have been greatly exaggerated." They are still an extremely competitive and well run company and will continue to be so. On the other hand, to ignore this quarterly loss as insignificant as some SWA guys seem to be doing is also foolish. This industry is constantly changing, the next 10 years aint gonna look like the last 10. SWA's period of year after year 15% domestic growth appear to be over. What’s next - who the hell knows? International flights? Eventually a 737 follow on aircraft? It will be interesting.

What is amazing is not only the jealousy, [B]but these are the same whiners on other posts that tell guys working for the[B] Virgin America's of the world that they are bringing wages down. Here at SWA you have industry leading wages bringing up the quality of life of all pilots. People like EWR and waterboarder should be embarrassed to call themselves pilots. Way to go guys, give yourselves a hand, clap, clap, clap.
what's amazing is that you either don't see that or want to see that. you work for jetblue right?
