People Express

Well they may not be a scam. It's not a crime to be dreamers. If they are genuine then their marketing approach is way too naive. They do not appear to appreciate yield management.

Simple lesson .101

Remember People Express ?
You'd need a few grey hairs to remember those guys and they also operated on the concept of pilots acting as dispatchers, baggage handlers etc. Not a bad way for pilots to keep their waistlines trim however.

People Express had an identical approach filling a 747 and charging rock bottom prices, but then American Airlines came back swinging, offering a four tier ticket pricing strategy. AA's lowest tier matched PE's giveaway prices, but also sold more expensive tickets with superior passenger entitlements, like transferability of tickets, full refundibility for full priced tickets etc. AA's approach worked and drove People Express out of business.

Even if they're sincere People Express proved their marketing approach as flawed and naive.

You are correct about the landscape of the early eighties. But things are different today. Everyone is a bottom feeder and looking for the lowest web prices. Low cost carriers probably made up less than five percent of AAs competition then and they had the ability (re. $$$) to fight off low fare competition. But today, probably at least fifty percent of their domestic market is in direct low fare competition. That's why they and Delta and others are all putting new assests into international.

Now that isn't to defend or encourage whatever Family is, but just remember things are a whole lot different today then 29 years ago.

Make that 30 years. Back when I was a neophyte USAF pilot in the late 70's with airline stars in my eyes, I actively used my FAPA subscription to study lots of airlines. Family was one. Same deal: volunteer, fork over some money up front, get in on the bottom floor. A number of the early volunteers got talked into giving over big money (thousands) to pay for training, which the airline would reimburse "later". Those guys were promised senior positions in Flight Ops because they were financially willing to display some loyalty to the airline. This scam went on for about a year, after which Family folded and kept all the money (around $1 Million, if memory seves me).

The guys I personally knew who got involved with this were not slouches; they were simply desperate to get into the airlnes any way they could. It cost them dearly. And they remained true believers right until the end.

Family preys upon the one universal trait all of us pilots share: the willingness to do just about anything to get into a cockpit. Buyer Beware with these guys.

Michaels kind of reminds me of Dr. Phil.

(This is Barry Michaels)

Dr. Phil could play Barry Michaels brother in the made for TV movie about Family Airlines.
