This Stuff Is Scary (Modern Binary Explosions)

Modern Binary Explosives :: Science Videos

With Al Qaida once again saying they are planning an even bigger attack, just seeing this video makes me think twice about flying. Seriously.

That's some scary stuff...

BoredwLife 11-24-2008 05:13 PM

Thats the stuff from Die Hard with a Vengance. More doomsday devices. YAY.

skatergeek 11-24-2008 05:15 PM

Holy crap that is crazy!!

LivingInMEM 11-24-2008 06:19 PM

At some point our government will have to realize the risk of these evolving threats and start going less for show and more for substance. Unfortunately, I think our gov't has problems placing more emphasis on actual risk prevention than on the latest PC trend.

deltabound 11-24-2008 06:20 PM

Watermelons of the world . . . BEWARE!

Planes should be safe enough with the mighty TSA on the case though :)

mmaviator 11-24-2008 06:30 PM

where did G.I. JOE get this stuff? I think he is trying to compete with Gallagher. Pumpkins, you are save for another year.

PittsburghDude 11-24-2008 07:12 PM

i dont know what scared me more the explosion or the music playing. creepy.

The scary music is more worrisome to me. I've blown up many watermelons with Black Cats and M-80's. Not too hard to blow up a watermelon. They need to put a couple of ounces of that stuff in a pipe, strap it to an old Ford Fiesta, light it up, then send it over a cliff. That might be impressive, but the watermelon, not so much. I guess it is kinda scary that you could conceal it so easily, I'll give'm that.

frozenboxhauler 11-24-2008 09:18 PM

Oh, Great!

Now the TSA won't let us through security if we're carrying a pen OR a watermelon!

But they will let the guy with flares strapped around his body through!!

rickair7777 11-25-2008 09:10 AM

Only the very best (and most expensive and hi-tech) explosives can produce anything close to that sort of energy-per-weight. The odds of developing a similar explosive which could be easily manufactured, detonated by low heat, and binary to boot are pretty slim.

I suspect the video was over-dramatized.

Herkulesdrvr 11-25-2008 09:16 AM

What scares me the most is that my head is shaped like a watermelon. Will I have extra screening now?

Now that was funny!! :):)

Going through TSA in MSP, I lost my toothpaste because I wasn't in uniform (but I was in the employee line and traveling positive space on company business). He said he was going to let the other things through to cut me some slack (this was a supervisor btw).

Did you notice how they shine the light on your badge now? I asked one guy why he was doing it. He said for practice! Because the new badges were going to have a light sensitive strip in them but no badges have it yet... so they were "getting ready" for the change....

STILL GROUNDED 11-27-2008 07:30 AM

Why is this crap even posted. It should be viewed as a threat to national security and removed the minute it shows up on the internet. There is no practical use for this video.

I am not complaining about posting it here but the fact that video ever made it to the public is horrible.

This topic is in the realm that is far beyond our scope or control. We will moderate airline-specific security content, but this one is very general...kind of like MANPADS, everything you want to know is already on wiki.

2Co2Fur1EXwife 11-27-2008 12:07 PM

Um....hey guys, did any one else smell B.S. after watching that? come on, you cant really believe that is true. Did anyone bother to actually look at the web site that hosts that video? If that stuff existed, airplanes would be falling out of the sky. I think talking about 'threat to national security' is a bit over-dramatic. Don't believe everything that you see online, especially from a clown web site like that! (Oh yeah, the creepy music did well for effect)

You took me wrong Rick. I don't mind it being here (APC), I mind it being anywhere. That is the kind of stuff that censorship needs to be installed on. I am all about freedom of speech but stuff like that could potentially take away freedom from breath which I value a bit more.

Yes, I said that earlier. I have some experience with explosives, and that would be pushing the outer realm of possibility.

Also a solid spherical object which suffers an impact on one side will focus the resultant shockwave on the exact opposite side with dramatic results...probably why they used a watermelon vice a cinderblock...more dramatic results for the bang.

Thanks for posting this Fatty.

There are an inordinate number of threats against commercial aviation and this is just one, although very scary with its' potential. I personally am even more concerned about the RF threat especially since the Soviets had the portable transmitters and they worked beautifully. Just imagine parking off the departure end of a major airport's active runway and "shooting" a newer generation B-757, 777, Airbus A-380 as it passes 1,000' over Boston, New York, SFO, etc. No noise, no blast, no signal...just an aircraft with virtually all of it's computers neutralized.

Think about that one. BTW, for those concerned about his being posted on the Internet, the entire instruction book for making the bomb that Ramzi Yousef used on Phillipine Airlines Flt # 454 was posted on the net years ago complete with part numbers and how to order the components.

G'Day Mates

I was just discussing this with a relative of mine. He is one of the "did you hear cow mutalations are up" type of people, but every now and then he brings up a good point.

Apparently he's heard rumors of a large scale EMP test that Russia did and the results were spectacular.

I wonder if the trusty Maddog would continue flying?

This stuff doesnt bother me... what does bother me is that I can get on the train in New Jersey or the subway in NYC with WHATEVER I want with absolutely no screening whatsoever. And people are finally starting to talk about how dangerous that is NOW?

Are you guys serious?

The reason stuff like this isn't "removed" from the internet....or why we're not screened using public transportation...is because we live in America and not the Soviet Union or North Korea or Germany of the NSDAP.

I'm calling BS. Fugly? YGBSM!

First, there are lots of breaks in the video. We don't know that the drop they showed is actually what they used. Why mix up that much just to use a drop? They used it all.

Second, the guy in camouflage lighting it was a nice touch to make it look "official". Except that the Army doesn't wear the old jungle camo any more. Setup?

Third, if it was this easy to use and procure, planes would be dropping out of the sky.

BoilerUP 12-01-2008 05:41 AM

Joe, I too noticed the woodland BDUs on the dude in the video...and also wondered why they mixed up so much yet only used a single drop. Noooooooo, they'd never do that for the purpose of over-dramatizing the explosive yield..

Could have changed the words at the end to read "Nuclear weapons although rare on todays world black market...should we be worried?"

FEAR! OBEY!

(and I'm no primary English teacher, but the grammar in that video is AWFUL)

That about sums it up.

First off, I will say that I too was very surprised when I saw the video. It is hard to believe. But what evidence do we have to suggest that it isn't?

Breaks in video? Bad grammar? Fake military uniforms? Paaaaalease!

Where does it say in the video that this is a US military member? Perhaps this video is from overseas which might explain the bad grammar, poor music, and odd clothing.

I'm skeptic too, but your arguments hold no water.

How about chemistry...

If it's even possible, that yield would be at the outer limit of conventional explosive chemistry. There ARE hard-and-fast energy limits...that's why they invented the a-bomb, because chemistry wouldn't go much farther.

In addition to pushing the boundaries of the start-of-the-art, they ALSO

Made it in a convenient binary form, suitable for field-expedient use.

AND made it just sensitive enough to light with a match, but not so sensitive that it blows up when you mix it

You can build an airplane that goes Mach 3+

You can build one with a MGTOW > 1 Million Lbs.

You can build one with a 40-hour endurance.

But it would be pretty hard to build one that could do all three.

Yeah Right...
