Does a type rating hold real value?

I have to go back to flying the A320 as an F/O. Having been on it before I can do a 2 week requal or 4 week requal. The 4 week will give me a type rating that I don't currently have (but do on 767).

My question: What is the value of a type rating. If I have to go to another airline would they pick the type rated guy first????

Thanks

Kelly

I don't know about the USA, but if you have to look overseas for work it's very important.

sfergson727 12-09-2008 05:13 PM

Good question. It depends on the airline, (SWA for example requires the 737) and whether you have experience in the airplane. Most airlines, I think, will place more emphasis on a type rating if you have flight time in the aircraft, versus going to a school just to get the type.

Personally, I have ten type ratings listed on my ATP. Did I get hired because I was typed in one of the fleet types at my employer? I don't know, but I'm sure it did not hurt.

dojetdriver 12-09-2008 05:13 PM

Why would you NOT want a free type rating?

I hate the idea of living a hotel for 2 additional weeks unless I'm getting something of real value.

Does a type rating mean I can legally fly as Captain??

Thanks for any help

In this industry its always possible that you may be looking for a job in the future. The type with time in the a/c would mean a lot at that point.

YES, mabye. Depending on the type of operation and after taking a PIC check.

Yes it does. And its huge overseas...should it ever come to that. Go for it.

rickair7777 12-09-2008 07:39 PM

Is it worth two weeks of your life? Maybe...if you are open to going overseas in search of work and suspect that you might need to someday.

Ski Patrol 12-09-2008 07:50 PM

I'm sorry but how can you have a type on the 767 and not know the answer to this? 2 weeks it's cheap insurance to keep a door open just in case.

FLYLOW22 12-09-2008 08:20 PM

No.

Types are for pilots that already have a job.

rotorhead1026 12-10-2008 03:10 AM

Two weeks in a hotel? Peanuts. Of course it's worth it. Rig something up so that you can demonstrate a circling approach on your checkride. Some Asian carriers don't like the circling restriction and make you get it removed before they'll hire you.

UCLAbruins 12-10-2008 03:13 AM

Overseas, it matters a lot. They're always looking for type rated Captains, and F/Os.

As far as U.S airlines, I don't think it matters a whole lot. Many regional pilots, specially F/Os want to go to Asia or the Mid East to fly a 777. They think when the majors start hiring they'll be the first to get the call.

It is far more important to have 1000 hrs. jet PIC than a any type rating. (just my opinion)

Does anyone else think these are strange questions?

It made me wonder if these are actually pilots asking the question

I never got a job from a type rating, I got my type ratings from my job.

Most type ratings are not going to help unless you already have experience in that type. Ex: type rating and 500 hours as CA/FO. Even international airlines want time in type.

Depending on where you might go or apply the type rating may or may not be worth much.

Is it worthless? No.

I was wondering the same thing

It seems that someone in his/her position would already know the answers to these questions....

why/how would someone with a 767 type not know if a 320 type would be a good thing or not?

And this is why I avoid airline forums. Even a reasonable question is attacked.

I don't know it's value because I always thought if my miserable airline failed I would fall back on the second career I've been building since 9/11. The airline said I had to have a type for Int'l ops. OK fine.

Thankyou to those who saw fit to help vice insult.

As for terrorist assertion I'm headed to Iraq for 2 mo's of military.

Thanks

Do you want my flight manuals? I won't need them after January 14th.

On every application I've filled out, there was a section for type ratings. So you tell me, you have two applicants, everything equal, but one person has a type in the aircraft your company flies.

If you feel that your current employer is your final employer, by all means, live up that 2 weeks of your life. Otherwise, work hard and enjoy your new type rating.

Take the opportunity and get the free type rating. Your employer is offering you a $10,000+ benefit... why pass it up? You never know when you might need it or wish you had it.

sharkhunter 12-12-2008 05:36 PM

Your a fool if you dont get the type.....does that help ?
