Default UAL MEC on age 60

With a Special MEC Update for Thursday, May 19, 2005, this is MEC Communications Chairman Steve Derebey.

On Thursday, the United MEC met in special session to consider taking a position on the Age 60 Rule. The following resolution was passed by the United MEC:

BE IT RESOLVED, the United MEC supports the current policy requiring pilot retirement at age 60.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, the UAL-MEC directs the Master Chairman to use all appropriate resources to seek changes to the PBGC and Social Security rules that negatively impact a pilot’s retirement at age 60.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, should the current FAA retirement age change, prior to implementation of any such modification, the United MEC directs the Master Chairman to use all appropriate resources to seek resolution of the following issues:

  • Medical Certification Requirements
  • To preserve all current retirement rights under the CBA and IRS rules, and to make necessary adjustments to CBA, IRS, Social Security and PBGC rules in order to accommodate any change in the retirement age.
  • Disposition of any Grandfather rights
ALPA's Executive Board, which is comprised of all MEC Chairs of ALPA-represented carriers, is expected to discuss the union's position on Age 60 at its May meeting next week in Washington, D.C.
