I must disagree with all of these negative posts about Alaska's jumpseat policy! For two years the Men and Women at Alaska have gotten me to work from SEA to ANC! Many times with every seat full and both jumpseats occupied! On one occasion while on probation, the Capt elected to take me as a second jumpseater by asking OPS to download five hundred pounds of fuel just to get me on! For what its worth, I have yet to meet a classier, professional, dedicated group of men and women! I for one appreciate the ride and courtesy rendered! Thank You

Alaska crews have always gone out of their way to accommodate me as have the CSRs which are consistently outstanding. Sadly, they go well beyond what I could expect at my own airline. Still, it's a professional courtesy to jumpseat and if ops manuals outline a company rule, you can't knock a guy for standing by it.

Reading this thread, I think everyone feels the same gratitude for the generosity and courtesy when jumpseating offline - but that IS something when the CSRs go out of their way to make you feel welcome.

Of course that's just a normal day at Alaska.

FLIGHT OPERATIONS
MULTIPLE JUMPSEAT – COACH CLASS MAIN CABIN
Multiple Jumpseat – Access
The CSA will process pilots requesting a coach seat using the Multiple
Jumpseat program within JACS. The list of airlines approved for Multiple
Jumpseats is maintained within the JACS program.

Pilots/Dispatchers working for a company with which we have a Multiple
Jumpseat agreement must be in good standing and eligible for jumpseat
access on their own airline. If approved through JACS, they will be placed on the non-revenue standby list. Captain’s approval is not necessary.

First Class seats may not be assigned to a Multiple Jumpseat rider. (emphasis added) The Multiple Jumpseat program is a coach class program only. Names of pilots provided a seat under the Multiple Jumpseat program will appear on the Final Flight Attendant Report, so the crew knows the location of these individuals, should they be needed in the event of an emergency.

... I have never seen a captain take much interest in what seat the jumpseater was given on his boarding pass. Usually it's just a pilot poking his/her head into the cockpit and flashing an ID and asking for a ride home, or to work. It's only if they are sitting up front that we are supposed to ask for their companay ID, certificate, medical, and boarding pass.

So much for Captain's authority

Thanks to all the Alaska crews that have given me a ride home. 99% of the crews I've encountered have been great. And thanks to the guys who have bent the rules and given me a first class seat or a free northern bites meal it is very much appreciated after a bad 4 day.

It is my understanding, by the Cass rules, all seats must be full before an offline jumpseater can ride in the cockpit. So if the jumpseater is sitting in the cockpit with a first class seat open, the flight crew would technically be in violation of the rules.

So how does AS get around the whole, "if an OAL jumpseater, if there are open seats in the cabin, the jumpseat rider must occupy one of them instead of the actual jumpseat, even if CASS approved," from the TSA?

Edit: Guess it pays to read the last page before posting. DO'H!

It saddens me to hear that people have problems on Alaska. We do carry lots of JS's and I know that the crews I fly with are nothing but warm, welcoming, and professional. I have had a few CA's that have b!tched a bit, but it does not take long to explain what it is like to be a commuter. Please don't judge the whole from a few.

Welcome Aboard!

Ditto from me. We often have jumpseaters sometimes 2 in the FD, but all have always been welcome. I had to read the FOM myself about no first class.
As said before, don't lump all AS pilots in with the very few, when you may not know the whole story. Maybe a senior manager was riding in back and the Capt. was just CYAing.
