Actually, with several friends who were furloughed, then on mil leave, and now furloughed again, I am interested in what is going on at UAL.
Current DOH of most junior furloughee? Any predictions of recalls? Any good news out there on the horizon?
Current pain in no way diminished a lot of the good folks that are still there.

What I hear
I resigned back in Sept 07 but have several buds still stuck at UAL. Today I can confirm that the furloughs are still planned for the spring and that the bottom guys going out the door when all is said and done are summer 99 guys. I was a fall 98 guy and my stick bud that is still at UAL confirmed that when and if all of the planned furloughs go thru he will be approx 150 from the bottom and safe from furlough...(11 years and don't have to be worried about furlough.)
1997 guys are flowing back to the 767/A320 from the 777 with displacement bids from early fall 08, but no training dates for the new lower pay on smaller equipment. LIMBO is status quo apparently. EVERYONE IS MISERABLE to an individual. No end in sight, and contract up for all groups in Dec 09. All of my buds are getting set for furlough number 2. We were all initially whacked in 2003, bypassed until 2007 and now being shown the door. thanks for showing up again.
Hope this helps,

Here`s the latest, United is desperately hoping they merge with CAL, in hopes Larry saves them from the absolute worst management team in the history of this once a great company. Bad news is no one at CAL (with the exception of maybe management) wants this merger, nor do they want anything to do with United as it is for lack of a better word a sinking ship.
The other side of that argument is that the new improved Delta is going to force the merger of the two, as Delta has become a much more cost efficient company, and will be able to compete more agressively in the market.
So management at both companies probably want it, the United pilots probably do as well, seeing as they are facing the short end of the waves; the CAL guys would rather stay independent and take advantage of the future growth on account of a much better ran company. Quite frankly, I do hope CAL stays independent, otherwise the CAL pilots will be paying for Tilton`s mistakes for a long time.
(Any second now the United die-hards will come in here to flame...how dare I write the truth on a public forum??!)

Having said that, glad CAL is the be all end all in aviation. We don't have to but I'll remind you of where folks wanted to be a decade ago and how hard it was to get hired at UAL after the EEOC mandates expired.
Watch out! Maybe it's CAL's turn next!
My personal prediction is continued pain throughout the industry for 6 or 7 years. Wanna bet CAL doesn't tweak their plans in that time frame? Orders for aircraft ain't aircraft my friend.

Furlough numbers on the UAL are current:

APC update sources report that
1.) Widebody and narrowbody flying is in decline, domicile rosters are shrinking, and there is a push to outsource [additional] flying.
2.) VERY VERY limited communications from UAL ALPA about anything after the union lost an TRO lawsuit for Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) and certain pilots from engaging in "unlawful work slowdowns".
3.) ALPA forum closed as a result of the lawsuit.
