I sent a letter to ALPA national asking if we would take advantage of the current positive press on Sully and crew and remind the public why you want well compensated people flying your aircraft. The response I got was "we can't praise a group of individuals who work for a union that broke away from ALPA".

Then John Prater is a liar. He claims he wants to restore the profession (a dubious claim I'll grant), but in reality to ALPA, it's clearly just about looking out for ALPA. You put it very well when you used the word myopic. I'm no longer employed by an ALPA carrier, but if I were I'd be extremely upset at ALPA's decision to put politics ahead of doing the right thing for the entire industry (well, I am extremely upset about it, I just don't have a voice in changing things anymore).

I thought they completely missed my point on this and I'm incredibly frustrated by the myopic vision of ALPA on this.

Is there a better example of cutting of your nose to spite your face?

I don't doubt your word for an instant, but could you post that actual response somehow? Myopic indeed - breathtakingly so! :(

The more I think about it, the more shameful I think it is. So, a US Air crew does a wonderful job in saving peoples lives and out union can't congratulate them because they left the union? Are our leaders like 12 year olds or something?

I would love to see the actual response as well. I will use it to show people what is wrong with our leadership (there is none).

And how much money did US Airways pay ALPA in the last 20 years?

This was taken from ALPA's press release on 1/16, concerning US1549:

ALPA Responds to LGA Accident

January 16, 2009 - The US Airways accident in New York has dominated the news over the last few days. From the preliminary accounts it appears this crew, under the command of former long-time ALPA Safety Representative Capt. Chesley B. “Sully” Sullenberger and First Officer Jeff Skiles, did an extraordinary job in landing their aircraft in the water and in safely evacuating every passenger on board. It will be a few days or weeks before we know the direction of the investigation but we know at this point that the professionalism of the crew has been universally praised and how fortunate everyone is that there were no fatalities.

Although the pilots at US Airways are now represented by an independent union, the safety issues highlighted by this accident have implications for all of us. ALPA continues to emphasize the value of having well-trained professional men and women in the cockpits and cabins of commercial aircraft to ensure the safety of our passengers and customers. Our ALPA safety team will remain active during the course of this investigation. We will continue our liaison efforts with NTSB and FAA to ensure relevant ALPA safety issues are known and to ensure we have the most current information on the progress of the investigation...

And of course, it was widely reported that Prater sent a personal e-mail to USAPA President Bradford, offering any assistance they may need.

You may be frustrated but not SURPRISED I note. ALPA left USAirways many years ago. They simply forgot to stop lining their pockets with our dues money before they decided to leave us twisting in the wind.

USAPA are a bunch of thieving scabs, as a matter of fact the only people running usapa are ex-alpa officers, scabs every single one of them.
