Pilot Monitoring or Pilot Not Flying
Are you in the PM or PNF camp?
|
In a two man crew, what’s the difference between a Non Flying Pilot, and Monitoring Pilot???
Does the Pilot Not Flying read the checklist, tend to radio communications, read the paper, take a nap, eat his crew meal? Or, does the Monitoring Pilot read the checklist, tend to radio communications, read the paper, take a nap, eat his crew meal? |
We don't define crew positions by what you don't do (PNF), but we do define crew positions by what you do (PM). As a PNF, I also am not serving drinks to the passengers, but you don't think of yourself as a PNFA, pilot not flight attending.
As a pilot, you are always "flying", or in better terms, responsible and in control of the aircraft, you might not be the one who is physically maneuvering it. Perhaps if we had more PMs instead of Pilots Not Flying, we wouldn't have some of these stupid accidents. |
Because fatigue isn't and issue at all. Hasn't it been listed as a contributing factor in every accident in the last decade?

Cool! Now that I can be a PM, I won't get in an accident. Last sim, when I had a flight control malfunction, I was actively flying and monitoring. My co-pilot had his head in a checklist and the computer getting the plane set up for landing. I don't really care for the change. It is window dressing.

I think PM is a more correct term, because we are ALWAYS flying
|
I have seen both terms used... doesnt make a rats rear end to me which you used.
|
I couldn't care less, but I think this is for the lawyers.
|
We switched from PNF to PM, because like others already said, you are both flying. Are the pilots confused by this? No. Did our jobs change? No. ;)
