It takes a very long time to explore, drill, and extract petroleum from the earth. These nonsensical campaign slogans only show how easily we can be swayed as Americans.

What is your point? Are you implying that since it won't do any good for 20 years we shouldn't start now?

Assuming the 20 year figure you quote is accurate (which I doubt by the way), wouldn't that be all the more reason to start drilling NOW?

It is irrational the way we as a country refuse to use our own natural resources.

Speaking of "non-sensible campaign slogans" that "easily sway Americans", How do you feel about the one that goes "hope n change"?

Sorry, I couldn't resist. IC_All, can you please find it in your heart to forgive me?

Anything that swayed Americans from electing McCain is a great thing.

IC_ALL, he started it!

The fields in the Gulf are already explored and mapped. The Chicoms and the Cubans are exploiting those resources right now. While we are studying geology, you can study economics. Oil prices are set on a spot market by commodities traders. How they bid up the price is based on where they think the value of oil and the dollar will be in the future. If we announced a concerted effort to drill and extract oil from the Gulf those traders would bid down the price of oil rather quickly. The same goes for Alaska.

The point is there is absolutely no excuse or logical reason for not tapping our own petroleum resources immediately. There are only political arguments.

Just to 'tap' into this thought:

Scenario-
China drills outside US territory into an oil field/reservoir/cache that primarily sits inside of US territory.

Bad, right?

No, worse. An environmental disaster.

Because of poor drilling and site protection measures, as China drains our oil cache nearly empty, sea water rushes into the cavity and percolates the remaining oil up through weaknesses in the sea floor in US territory and oil washes ashore on our gulf coast.

Scenario over, please return to your regularly scheduled programming;)

Kuwait did it to Iraq and look how that turned out.

You guys must of missed the last 8 years we spent with drilling as the only national energy policy. Huge tax breaks and we got $150/barrel oil and ExxonMobil making 10 billion a quarter.

...some pilots REALLY need to crack a Wall Street Journal every now and again...
