Default Pilot of CAL Flight 61 dies in flight

Just reported on the news this morning, this flight is still in the air and the co pilot is supposedly flying the plane. It is enroute from Brussels to Newark and one of the pilots has died enroute. I am guessing the Captain, as the newsman reported the Co pilot is flying.

Kind of weird, not much more than this reported yet and not sure what happened. Just heard it on the news.

Anyone else heard anything? If this is true, my thoughts and prayers to the family and friends.

OK it was just confirmed. The flight is CAL 61, it is a 777 and it is 40 minutes out of Newark. They are speculating who is actually flying the plane and a local New York station has speculated there is a reserve crew on board as well.

Wow, again, prayers and thoughts for the family and friends.

Its true, the Captain died enroute. They are currently 200 miles NE of Newark. CAL flight 61 a Boeing 777 enroute from Belguim. My thoughts and prayers are also with the family of those affected.

F/O's can land? Outrageous! Everyone knows the tower is going to talk them down. That is probably one quiet/somber aircraft right now. RIP.

I am surprised they would not guard this information a bit more. I know it is hard to do with everyone involved but imagine the family of the crewmembers knowing they have a loved one working this flight? Particularly if you knew your family member was the Captain. What a terrible way to learn of his/her passing. There must be a better way to handle this.

Asking the media to be responsible is like asking Congress to stop wasting money.

I agree with you. I don't know what the procedure is for notification in an event like this, but I'm sure once it's been broadcast "it's out there" and then it hits the web. I don't know how one could prevent it.

Sad. My thoughts to the family.

Was flipping through the news channels when I saw this online.

MSNBC anchor stated they were not going to release flight information or the flight number since the network was not aware if the appropriate notifications had been made to family members yet.

Of course, flipping up to CNN they give the flight number. They shouldn't have.
