Flight Captain Arrested at NN Airport
#11
If you arrest someone and you do not have the authority to do so, that is false arrest, and false imprisonment. If it was not airport police, Newport News police and TSA doesn't have arrest authority, whoever did this should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. The Captain needs to see the District Attorney immediately and file charges.

TSA has been given way to much latitude lately and they appear to be gaining momentum. We now have "agents" spying on crews at the airport to see if walk-arounds are done correctly, what next? We should be very concerned with the increasing authority delegated to.....well you know.

Can you elaborate on this more? Are you saying that they are watching, and then reporting on, your preflight inspection?

I haven't heard about TSA agents being given the authority to evaluate preflight inspections but I have no doubt they believe so themselves...
All aircraft pitot tubes should be clearly marked "TSA - STAY AWAY!"

There was also talk of CVG TSA watching safety inspections. Sometimes they would go so far as to put a little flag in one of the million doors on the CRJ to see if you'd notice it. I guess jamming a piece of cloth/plastic somewhere in an airplane that wasn't meant to hold that particular piece of material wasn't deemed a safety risk... Oh, and a guy that would have a regular SIDA badge with a picture of a german shepherd on it just to see if anyone would notice... If they didn't - violation time.

I dont know about anyone else, but I had a TSA guy come out and watch me do my preflight once. The question I wondered is how this average joe TSA guy would know what I am looking for, or if I missed something, or even if I really was doing the preflight for that matter instead of just looking like I was doing it. I just didn't understand the point of it all.

The funny thing is, the "legacy" we feed for that goes to some of the same cities and uses an aircraft that has panels accessible to a crew member doing a preflight/postflight inspections doesn't require their crew members to do the same thing.

Private pilot (for now) speaking...
IMO that is unacceptable. A professional should not be subject to scrutiny by somebody who has not been trained in that profession. That person was clearly out of line. That type of behavior was clearly out of line and is the sort of thing that needs to be nipped in the bud before it gets out of hand (like pay, contracts etc..all those problems started small).
Is there any sort of place where this stuff can be reported? It needs to be followed up with swift and severe consequences for the offending party.
Pilots used to be at the top of the food chain. It's sad to see that very little remains of the prestigious profession that I fell in love with all those years ago.

You're joking right? Prestigious profession? What is prestigious about being an airline pilot. Top of what food chain? Airline pilots are just labor and to think otherwise is well.....it just isn't the case.
