Thanks. I just came across that. That flight is definitely my plan A. Any ideas for a plan B? I'm thinking j/s on CO out of EWR to Dublin, then buying a ticket on Ryanair to Budapest. Any better ideas out there??

If your carrier has agreements with ZED carriers, flights over the short distances within Europe are quite cheap. There should be multiple flights per day from any of the European gateway airports: AMS, CDG, FRA, etc. And actually, if your carrier has an agreement with Malev (mine does), they fly to BUD from quite a few airports within Europe.
Remember, as a jumpseater unable to use the flight deck jumpseat internationally, you are the very last person on the plane. I'd only rely on that direct Delta flight if it's fairly open.

If you can't find a cheap flight from elsewhere in europe don't forget about the trains, you can find some pretty cheap rail tickets, and it's a great way to catch some free scenery along the way. Budapest is a really cool city, you'll have a great time there
If you do get on the rail, depending on the price of the ticket a first class upgrade is definitely worth the few bucks more, although the trains have gotten better over the years...
Reminds me of a story when i was in college and took an overnight train from Prague to Budapest and was woken up in the middle of the night during a stop in Bratislava by border guards pointing assault rifles at me...

There was also a CSA JFK Prague, and probably still is. It only gets you to Prague but that is like a 2h drive to BUD. Also try Vienna which is again about 2h drive to BUD. As a backup JFK BUD is done by Malev as it as mentioned earlier. Not sure how that works. We did not have an agreement with them.

It's a good think you visited in the summer. Bratislava can get very depressing in the winter...
