BA 777 Captain reportedly quits

Crash-landing hero pilot quits BA after ‘smear campaign’

The pilot hailed a hero when he oversaw the crash-landing of a British Airways jumbo at Heathrow is leaving the airline after falling victim to a smear campaign, it was claimed today.
Captain Peter Burkill, 45, was praised after the Boeing 777, with 151 people on board, was brought down safely after it suddenly lost power two miles from the runway after a flight from Beijing in January last year.

The FO was the one at the controls.

Well, at least he had fun in his younger, pre-BA days. (link is safe for work, but I suppose the topic is somewhat "adult")

It is correct that Peter Burkill will shortly be leaving BA, as shall I.

We are among a total of 78 BA pilots - the majority of whom are Senior Captains on the B747 and B777 fleets - who have accepted a severance offer from BA and who will all leave BA on the 31st August 2009.

For most, this offer amounts to roughly $240,000 (one year's basic salary) of which $50,000 will be tax free under UK tax law, with lesser amounts being offered to those with less than 26 year's service.

I wouldn't presume to speculate on his reasons, as a relative youngster, for leaving BA so early, but it has been widely reported that he was unhappy with some comments that were allegedly made by one or two individuals in the Cabin Crew Training Centre after his incident.

We are told that BA (who, to be fair, has always backed him publicly) investigated the matter, and apparently could find no evidence of any of the alleged comments.

His reputation, amongst his fellow pilots, remains stellar; as does the reputation of his two F/Os; and his departure is widely regarded as a loss to the airline by those who know him.

Even before these 78 pilots have left the airline, BA has already embarked on a second round of pilot job cuts and are are looking to shed another 100 pilots by 31st October 2009.

Only this time there is no offer of any severance payment!

Best Regards

Bellerophon

Sounds like a good chap. It is a shame they bad-mouthed him. Doesn't sound like he deserves it.

cactusmike 08-10-2009 08:30 PM

I would imagine he has something else lined up, it would be crazy to dump that kind of seniority at a major airline like BA. I don't care how bad things are at the legacys right now, left seat on a 777 insulates you from a lot of the crap.

I'm just curious. But why would a CA be so distraught over something said by cabin crew training that he would feel the need to leave?

mynameisjim 08-11-2009 07:16 AM

There's no way any cabin crew trainer could make me walk off a job. But more importantly, how do you make it to 777 Captain by 45?3

CAL 73 08-11-2009 07:24 AM

Oh please, how many of us have not partied like a rock star in our early days. The media will dig up sh*t from ages ago just to get a story. Anyone who saves lives is a hero, regardless of their past.

For sure. For weeks the British press was full of pictures of pilot/party animal Prince Harry smoking doobies in London night clubs.

This BA pilot should sign a book deal and make some big bucks.

Moral of the story...

Don't bring cameras to room parties.

Oh and god bless Capt. Burkill for having had some good layovers. I don't see anything wrong with consenting adults letting their hair down from time to time. I wonder who the little strumpet was who released those photo's. I hope she was well paid.

There have been a couple of times when I was happy there was no photo proof. I hope all of you have had some of "those" layovers!;)

What...No one else picked up on the fact that a BA CA makes $240,000 per year? Gawd................................

We have 777 captains in their late 20's at my last job.

the secret is to stay away from American carriers.

Where was that?

ryguy 08-12-2009 12:18 AM

We have plenty of early thirties 777 and 744F Captains. Most were hired as young second officers for us. BA has/had a cadet program I believe so maybe he was a cadet or hired early as an SO.

What kind of world do we live in where stuff like this is 'embarassing'?

I think this makes the man a hero in my book.

Yeah, I bet his daughter and her friends get a kick out of it when they call it up during lunch.

BA Pilot 08-12-2009 08:52 AM

I too, am one of the 78 folks taking VR from BA (at 52 years of age from the 747 fleet)!

I spoke to Capt Burkhill a few weeks ago while waiting for transport to the crew car park. He suggested then to me that life had been 'difficult' ever since the first few days after the incident. He suggested that the 'open door' to Willie Walsh had been 'closed'. Rumour has it that some CC trainers had been feeding the line that he had 'frozen' after the landing. Investigations failed to prove any such incidents, but anyone within BA will recognise this as typical within a dysfunctional/out of control CC organisation.

Believe it or not, but his role as PIC in the LHR incident, now precludes him from achieving an interview in certain areas (Korean for one) as he has an accident on his file:mad:

He is a normal guy, guilty of nothing other than enjoying life, and being hounded out of a job by a few halfwits, and unsupported by management.

He will doubtless be welcomed by an enlightened airline who would see him as a 'sales opportunity'.

Good luck Pete

I hear gojets is hiring :D

Seriously tho he must have something lined up because I don't care what CC says, I would not take that walk out...Even tho it is worth 10 years of regional FO pay

Again, just curiosity. But why would the CA on a wide body aircraft of a globally recognized airline even bother to care what CC trainers said about him?

Do the CC trainers control the airline? Is a CA's (or any other pilot's) professional reputation made or broken by what those people "say" about somebody? Has respect for the position of PIC at foreign airlines sunk below that of the U.S. airlines?
