Midwest Press Release (We'd like to hear)
TIC
NEWSWIRE October 15, 2009
AP Release Washington DC
Today in a hastily arrange news conference, the head of the Airline Pilots Association, Captain John Prater along with Midwest Airlines MEC Chairman Captain Tony Freitas gave a surprise announcement of financial support to the pilots of Midwest Airlines.
Captain Tony Freitas:
“I stand here today to announce the Air Line Pilots Association will provide a new and innovated financial benefit to the ALPA pilots of Midwest Airlines in recognition of the forthcoming complete loss of pilot jobs at Midwest Airlines. Republic Airlines purchased Midwest Airlines and has refused to offer employment to the former Midwest pilots. Midwest‘s new owners hope that if they keep the same paint scheme and cookies, no one will notice that the crews who helped build this airline with it‘s well-deserved reputation for award-winning customer service are gone.”
Captain Prater:
I am pleased to announce that the National Council of the Airline Pilots Association has voted to authorize funds from the MCF to provide each current Midwest Airline pilot who tethers their resignation by October 17th, a sum equal to six weeks of Captain’s pay. These monies will enable our Midwest ALPA members to start anew their job search without the undue stress of making ends meet in the near term. Midwest pilots who choose to use this program will have the full resources of ALPA and it’s Furloughed Pilot Support Program. We hope this period of time will enable our soon to be furloughed ALPA pilots and their families the time, knowledge, and information they will need to make sound decisions for all as they hopefully will work themselves back into an ALPA cockpit.
Both Captain Prater and Captain Freitas acknowledged that pilot jobs are in short supply but the two Captains said the National Council felt using the MCF in this fashion was an appropriate measure given the current economic environment.
Neither Captain Prater nor Captain Freitas would comment on question of the financial impact this program might have on Republic Airlines should a large number of Midwest pilots tender their resignations en mass prior to the announced date for the cessation of Midwest Airline operations.
