US Airways to Cut 1000 Jobs, Reduce Flying

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Struggling US Airways said on Wednesday it will cut some 1,000 jobs next year, shift nearly all of its flying to its three hubs and Washington, and suspend several international routes.

It's a major retrenchment, and Chairman and CEO Doug Parker said he hopes it gets the airline making money again.

US Airways Group Inc. said the job cuts will happen in the first half 2010 and will include 600 passenger and ramp service workers, 200 pilots, and about 150 flight attendants. The airline will close crew bases in Las Vegas and at LaGuardia airport in New York on Jan. 31, and in Boston on May 2.

It's also scaling back international flying. It is suspending flying between Philadelphia and London Gatwick; Birmingham, England; Milan, Italy; Shannon, Ireland; and Stockholm. US Airways is also formally giving up its government permission to fly between Philadelphia and Beijing, which it had never used.

I hope these jobs are not going to RAH!

Hard to believe they are going to close the Vegas base. And I guess their new European expansion has been put on hold too.....

I was under the impression international is where the money is (was)?

As if these guys/gals haven't been through enough already. My condolences and best wishes and luck to my colleagues at Cactus.

RAH doesn't fly to Europe. Also, LGA is a large base for RAH's US Airways' flying, so they'll most likely be hit also in the reduction of flying. RAH doesn't do any flying for US Airways out of LAS either.

P.S. If you're flying a regional jet, Mr. Crj200, you're just as guilty as RAH in every respect.

There has been a glut of over capacity, paticulary on the North Atlantic markets, for almost a couple of years now.

Ok, I guess you can forget that 135 million AWAC gave to ya'll. Ok, buddy.

Also, I feel really bad that this happening to all the Catus guys, I hope maybe there can be a silver lining to this all.

RAH also provided US Airways with money, but I guess you never read that. And no, I'm not your buddy.

Touchy aren’t we? And thank you for letting me know that RAH does not fly to Europe.
And yes I am a furloughed regional pilot hoping that all flying done by regional goes to the majors.
