Default Pilot furious at U.S. for silence on bomb

Pilot furious at U.S. for silence on bomb

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Airline pilot Steve Danyluk was flying over Atlantic during bomb attempt but wasn’t notified
  • He only learned about it after landing “when I looked at the CNN Web site on my iPhone”
  • Writes “government clearly dropped the ball” after the incident as well as before
  • Danyluk: Only luck that this was not a coordinated attack involving multiple aircraft

Now someone please correct me, but should all the flights that were airborne in US airspace been notified of this incident at the time that it happened?
And if so, would that not have lead to chaos in the skies? Maybe I am missing something here.

If I were on a crew flying an international flight inbound to the U.S. (or for that matter anywhere) I'd want to know. But perhaps the fault does not rest with the feds, but with each individual carrier. According to an Delta All Pilots letter last week, all inbound flights to the U.S. were made aware of the situation. From what I heard chaos did not ensue.

I agree. Knowledge is power right. Even though knowing this and stopping it would be negligible.

Do you envision the pilots running up and down the aisles wildly waving their arms about? You WANT your crews aware of anything like this immediately so they can take appropriate measures aboard their own aircraft to possibly stop any attempts that may be taking place there!!

Steve is type rated on A/B-737 A/BE-200 A/DC-9; wonder who flys 737s across the Atlantic.

I wouldn't have been so quick to punch the panic button about this incident, but we could see close(r) calls that would warrant immediate alerts to crews.

What exactly are you the PIC of that you wouldn't want this information?

After 9/11, and the coordinated nature of those attacks, It could have easily justified that all airborne Translant flights were directed to land. One of AQ's plots from the 1990's (foiled thank goodness) was to simultaneously blow up Planes over the Pacific. That plot had to cross someones mind.

If I was flying at that time, I'd sure want that info so I could throw on the seat belt sign, brief the Flight attendants to keep people out of the Lavs for extended periods, and to keep a heightened awareness for weird behavior.

If you read the article you can see steve's current position.

How much closer of a call? So if there was a second simultaneous attempt would you have been a little quicker to pull the trigger? How about a third? Maybe we shouldn't have covered the story at all, it could have led to panic?

How about a discrete heads up to the F/A to look for bearded dudes playing with themselves.

I flew four domestic legs on Christmas. After my first landing, I saw the headline of "Passenger ignites firecrackers" on the TVs and I never gave it any other thought and completed the rest of the day. Not once were were contacted by the FAA or the company about possible terrorist activity -- the administration claims all aircrew were notified within 1 1/2 hours of the incident.
