JVs held up by CAL scope clause (article)

Pilots contract threatens Continental-United ventures - chicagotribune.com

Scope is about the only thing with any value left in our contract.

Dear Jeff, you give us +40% on C'08, we'll give you 110%. Deal? Until then, FUPM and no JV!

If they want it bad enough they WILL pay for it. (Look at DL/NW) YOU are in the driver`s seat this time. DO NOT forget that.

How did DL/NW pay for it? I'm unfamiliar with the details? Did they buy out old guys so that there were no furloughs or something? Pay raises? Better benefits?

If Cal gives in on scope they might as well give up on their career. It will open the door to the shrinking airline just look at UAL.

Consider this: UAL's management team opted to outsource flying to the wonderful Aer Lingus joint venture. More importantly, they decided to do it DURING contract negotiations.

If that's not a clear cut message about the direction that management (UAL and CAL) wants to take, I don't know what is. Don't give up scope. Period.

Too late for me, but...

Now is your moment guys. Don't give an inch on scope till you have a lucrative CBA with retro pay, large upfront improvements across the board, improved scope and a massive signing bonus. The lawyers and beancounters ruining this business could care less about your future, so you'd better care and get it in writing.

Till then, tell the arogant bastards to go pound sand.

Not entirely sure about that. CAL pilots are still some of the lowest payed (cost per pilot hour) in the industry. Lots of 3 and 4 year "new hires" still on the long slow ramp to reasonable wages. Still slop in terms of pay and benefits that other legacy pilots receive, compared to CAL pilots, who are cheated and scammed out of, at the hands of their crooked union and corrupt, greedy management.

CAL pilots too, may be hungry enough to be the ones that take your flying. Enthusiasm for changing the status quo seems to be waining in the light of the miserable economy. For example, consider the success of the union suggested ban on open time pick up. So? CAL pilots are still some of the cheapest. Watch your back.

Look at the trend in cost of pilot benefits near the bottom of this page:

"Cheated and Scammed?" CAL pilots voted in or agreed to all of it by themselves. I don't blame anyone but those who voted yes.
