Railroad Retirement Board
If we're all subject to the Railway Labor Act, why can't we also be a part of the Railroad Retirement Board?
For those not familiar, railway employees do not contribute to or receive benefits from Social Security. The RRB acts as a social security program for the railroads. It is much more stable, provides greater and more broad benefits, and has a much brighter future than Social Security. One of these for airline pilots would probably fair even better, as we have a higher than average income, comparatively few retirees, and stable long term employment compared to the average American citizen.
If we get stuck with the bad (RLA), we should lobby to get the good (RRB) also.

Railroad workers may not pay into social security, but they do pay into their retirement, which seems to do a better job of providing for their retirees because management is disallowed from dipping their hands into the cookie jar as the airline industry have allowed for years.

Exactly... the RRB is just like a mini-social security retirement plan, only for railroad workers.
Except, due to the fact that there isn't huge worker population growth, lots of able bodied working people, and predictable future... the system actually works. You're not paying money to support a bunch of freeloaders.

Never Happen.
With trillion dollar deficits, the feds are so desperate to vacuum every penny they can out of the pockets of taxpayers. We complain about our "low" wages but we are still much more highly paid than the average American.
In the eyes of the government we are "rich"; an attractive source of revenue that can be used to subsidize the less well off. They are not going to let us wiggle out of SS, into a program that will cost the treasury more money.

Of course the feds wouldn't want it, but maybe for once, ALPA can be more than a magazine subscription and push this for all of us to either get quality retirement and benefits or get us out of the RLA. It sure would be nice...
