Airtran to Bring 100 Pilot Jobs to MCO
AirTran Airlines unveils operations center, announces pilot base in Orlando - OrlandoSentinel.com
AirTran Airways, which unveiled a new $6.9 million operations control center near Orlando International Airport Tuesday, said it plans to move 100 pilots to Orlando this fall, generating millions of dollars in economic impact for the region.
The new pilot base joins Milwaukee and Atlanta as home turf locations for AirTran's pilots. In addition to giving the airline more flexibility with its staff, the new base will bring high-wage jobs from an industry coveted by economic developers.
Based on a typical pilot's salary, the total economic impact of the transfers could reach "tens of millions" of dollars, an AirTran spokesman said.
Bob Fornaro, the Orlando-based airline's chairman, president and chief executive, called the opening of the operations center and the addition of the pilot base "significant signs" of the airline's plans to continue to grow in Orlando.
"We are fortunate to be part of the fabric of Central Florida and look forward to continuing to increase our presence here both today and well into the future," Fornaro said.
AirTran employs more than 1,000 people in the Central Florida area, including at its corporate headquarters, operations center, and a maintenance facility.
I am kind of stumped on the economic impact, i am assuming they are not factoring in commuters.

Of course they don't. The take 100 pilot jobs, multiply by the average salary and use that figure. Any consideration about or for commuters is WAY down an airline manger's list of priorities.

This is funny. If Airtran is like every other airline I know of, they have plenty of pilots already living in Florida. The media and the general public are clueless about pilots, hubs, and commuting.
I remember after DHL bought Airborne and announced they would consolidate the two hubs (Cincinnati and Wilmington) to Wilmington, OH. The local businesses and realtors in Wilmington assumed that 500 Astar pilots would be moving there. A friend of mine talked to a realtor in Wilmington (not telling her he was an Astar pilot) and she was foaming at the mouth. Said real estate values were going to "skyrocket" as a result of all of these high paid pilots moving there.
Maybe a dozen pilots moved there. The rest just continued to commute from afar or drove up from thier homes in the Cincinnati area.
Of course, a couple of years later, DHL dropped an economic bomb on that city.
