Default Alaska To Start Bellingham-Honolulu Flights

Wonder how much the fare is going to be? Is it worth it to drive all the way to Bellingham?

From Seattle Times:

Travelers in Northwestern Washington and Vancouver B.C. will have a new way to reach Hawaii next year when Alaska Airlines starts nonstop service between Bellingham and Honolulu.

The news is a boost for the expanding Bellingham International Airport, ranked recently in a survey by Cheapflights.com as having the cheapest overall average fares among 101 U.S. airports for domestic flights.

Seattle-based Alaska said it will inaugurate nonstop service starting January 7 with a daily flight between Bellingham and Honolulu at 5:20 p.m. and a return flight at 10:25 p.m. The flights will be operated with Boeing 737-800 aircraft, accommodating 16 passengers in first class and 141 in the main cabin.

"It's really great news for folks in and around the Bellingham area," said Art Choat, Bellingham's director of aviation. "It makes life a whole lot easier for anyone going to Hawaii."

Bellingham is a popular starting point for Vancouver travelers. Estimates are that about 55 percent of Bellingham's business comes from Canadians.
Many, said Choat, are attracted by the ease of crossing the border by car, and catching a flight in the U.S., rather than dealing with the hassles of airport international arrivals and departures. They also can often get lower fares.

Discounter Allegiant Air offers 54 flights per week between Bellingham and Las Vegas, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Oakland, Palm Springs, Phoenix and San Diego. Alaska also flies nonstop to Las Vegas,

A $30 million airport terminal expansion is scheduled to start next month. When complete, the Bellingham airport will be able to handle 500,000 passengers per year, compared to 370,00 now.

Choat said he expects more announcements of increased service in the next three months.

I think the idea is to preempt the Allegiant BLI-HNL service when they get their 757s.

Be ready for constant tech stops in Oakland for gas or going with empty seats. All the way to HNL from an airport with a 6,700' runway in winter time with winds? I don't think so.

It's only about 38 NM more, and I'm guessing dispatch ironed out those types of incidences. They'll just have to bump passengers. Sucks for them, but it should be a $$$ maker.

BLI rarely if ever takes pax from the SEA area. It's always been about getting Canadians to drive across the border to avoid taxes flying out of YVR. The BLI parking lot is full of Canadian license plates all the time. G4 has proven Canadians will make the drive to save money.

Is it worth going to Hawaii in an Alaska 737 or an Allegiant 757?

The question is:

is it possible for a 737 on lease with seating for what 130? to compete with a 220 seat 757 that is owned for less than 7 mil?

If AK lowers fares to the g4 realm on this run, they will lose serious cash.

From a pax perspective, I'd rather fly on a 130 seat configured 737 than a 220 seat configured 757. Flying to Hawaii on ATA's all-economy 757's was PAINFUL!

From a pilot's perspective...757 wins.

Should be pretty neat. I'm a little surprised it wasn't announced earlier. Seems like they could pick up and start this tomorrow if they wanted, where as G4 still has quite a bit of road ahead of them before HNL.

I say more power to em. Have at it and good luck! Though non-revving will be a nothing but a dream out of BLI for a while I think.

Should be interesting... Seems AS and G4 are coexisting pretty will in BLI with the LAS route, so maybe this will be the same..
