Default Long or short haul?

I'm curious again. For the airline pilots around here - do you perfer long hauls that take you to another continent or across the country, or do you perfer the shorter hauls, and why?

Personally I enjoy the destinations that longer flights bring because they are generally more diverse and atypical of my normal life, not to mention longer layovers which allows more exploration on overnights... but when it comes to flying itself, I'd personally rather fly multiple short flights in a day rather than sit for 8 hours at a time...

That's exactly what I was thinking. Long hauls take you places, short hauls keep you busy...

After flying short haul domestic for the last 10 years I switched to the 757/767 to do Europe (just got back from Amsterdam). It is nice to go somewhere. One leg and eight hours is better than 4-6 legs to get eight hours. Then again, it nice to be in the USA. International has a whole new set of problems. I have to go to the UK next Wednesday and they are still having problems. The dollar is weak so everything you do costs lots of money. I'm enjoying the new destinations and experiences.

As a UPS MD11 Captain, luckily I like the long haul. I really enjoy the destinations, and flying AROUND the world, but sometimes the length of the trips (10-12 days) gets a bit tedious. My next trip is 11 days, but it is one of my faves. I fly between our hub in Cologne and Mumbai and Dubai. I have two two day layovers in Cologne, one of my favorite cities....

The best "FLYING" I ever had was at USA3000. Florida turns, go in @1630 back in base by 2330. Not a widely available option to most of us though. Since U3K's flying is a rarity, I wouldn't consider that an option for everyone.

Second best, 757 at CAL. DH over the pond, good time off with reasonable am shows in Europe.

Close third was US Airways Shuttle. 4 30 minute legs with great Captains and F/A's.

Fourth was AMC, east-coast-Double A/R-Djibouti. PHNL -A/R- EDDF, Norway-MSP. Anything over 9 hours SUX. Even Turkey-Baghdad turns with incoming is better.

Best combination=1 to 2 legs & under 8hrs CDT if you can find that. Your favorite airline should be the one that hires you, but while searching, think about the kind of flying you'd like to be doing from 50 to 60, maybe 65 years old and start from there.

I really like the long haul. I enjoy flying and, thankfully, after ten years at a regional I think I've had my fill of up and down, four legs a day. Now, one leg, eight to twelve hours is juussst right! And Cologne; frequent flyer card at Pascha .....the destinations are great; I get to see and experience places I would have probably never gone in my life. Long Haul is the life for me.

To CRJ, as a student it'll take you a while to get to a long haul position, so you'll get your fill of all the short hops first. Next step for you is probably to a regional; enjoy it while you're there. I've enjoyed every job I've had; some only in retrospect, but even the stuff that sucks while you do it will give you fond memories and a reason to appreciate your current job.

I think I'd like the long haul, though I can't really say (DA20's don't go so far). I like going places and seeing things. I'm sure you'd do a lot more of the on international flights.

Gosh I'd love to do what you're doing... flying an MD-11 for UPS... wow.
