There are plenty of sharp guys who could pass a sim check with their buddy company Examiner at 10am after a good cup of coffee. Not so much nearing the 14-16th hour of a duty day very late.

Seen enough guys at that age run out of gas and sleep patterns get more difficult to adjust.

Give them the 0200-0600 Sim slot and post the results.
You nailed it!

You don't even know what fatigue is until you do ad hoc long haul...

In the US, no problem over 65 since the medical doesn't change. Japan? Not so much.

This has nothing to do with aviation safety. It is in the guise of safety. The whole reason you want these standards is because you know it would weed people out of the profession... which means more time at the top for you. It's greed, really.

Because someone chooses to commute does not make them unsafe. If you have a 7pm show and you choose to go to the gym that day or to the park with your daughter and wife, should that be considered duty as well, you know, in the name of "safety?"

It’s because the 400 grams of daily protein (aka 20 chicken breasts) - based on 2grams per pound of weight- needed to maintain the physique is too difficult to carry on a four day

I was USAF enlisted and had 2 weight waivers based on body fat because I was “obese” according to BMI but not the caliper testing. Of course, if your aircraft is burning and you’re incapacitated, I’m thinking you want the CFR guy that does a few squats to be tasked with getting you out.

Once you stop lifting (especially into your 40’s), the muscle mass atrophies quickly. Unless you’re juicing. Last thing I want to do after a red eye is hit the gym. So I’m slowly sliding into the apnea category.

I would say high double digits and getting larger... our little airline is now hitching its future to hiring the Big Blue retirees at 65 to carry on till 68th B-day... We had 6 in the past 12 months hit the 68 departure number... As drivers in J-land are in high demand and packages are not keeping pace with markets any qualified guys/gals can keep on working and the Japanese like to work... Granted the age 60 medical is stepped up along with 63/65 and the over 60 sim check... Ours at 63 is a workout... Think all the LCCs are going to 68, the Big Blue and Red still holding the line at 65 from what I understand...

Kampai...

The death of an average male in the US is 79. Long haul pilots seem to be a lot less. Do you really want to leave less than 9 years to enjoy your retirement?!

I’ll be punching out as soon as possible. (Work...not dying)

No, it is about safety. There is an age that the vast majority of people will lose cognitive abilities along with slower reflexes and muscular decline.

Anyone who denies this makes it all about themselves and just wanting to stay in their seat as long as possible and damn the safety of those on the airplane.

Stop being so selfish and retire before you end up killing a plane load of people. Because by the time you think you should have retired it will probably be to late and if left to our own devices some would prefer to die at the controls.

When the old man has to be watched like a hawk, then it isn't his seat anymore.
