Retirement at age 70

Rumor has it that ALPA is kicking around pushing the mandatory retirement age to 70 now. Hope all us FO's don't mind another 5 years of stagnation. BOHICA

Ya, know that was on another web board, and the rumored originator just announced his candidacy for ALPA National president. I for some reason think that is a coincidence. I would love to see a article or clip showing him stating that.

I for one would flip! The thought itself is total BS! If they want to pull Age 65 because if 9/11 and bankruptcy....fine. But there is no excuse for wanting Age 70. It's unfair to other people who didn't get to ride the Age 60 retirements then feed off the payroll for 5 more years.

I'll vote for whoever makes it their main stance to bring the age back to 60.

Every pilot who voluntarily works past 60 now is forcing the pilots who follow them to work past 60 just to get to where they would've been originally. Age 65 (or 70) is allowing a completely selfish group of pilots spend more years at the top on the backs of all the pilots below them, while they spent their entire career benefiting from the retirements of those ahead of them at 60.

Who wants to work to 70 anyways? Not me! I'd rather not die from old age in a hotel, on a layover, or in an airline cockpit.

Maybe its time for an anti-Part 121 Age 60+ pilot movement. Single these people out and most importantly, those who pushed for the change. Sometimes it is hard to decide if ALPA is a union or an enemy. And to the 60+ers: your selfishness and inability to plan for the future is not my fault and I shouldn't have to pay for it.

How much control/influence does alpa really have as far as stopping it? I was under the impression that 60---->65 was going to happen whether alpa/swapa, etc. liked it or not. I.E., it was more of a lobbying effort from AARP/Baby Boomers and the congressmen/senators representing them angling for re-election.

I think they probably have a lot more power than they lead us to believe. One of those "its going to happen anyways" to the public while in private "lets make it happen". I would much rather have heard "they want to make it happen but we're going to stop it."

I doubt congress really cared much about the matter. If you think about it, this helps probably 10000 pilots country-wide at most. Thats, on average, only 200 votes per state. Its not even worth wasting time on for the votes.

Someone pushed hard for this to happen and my bets are that it was ALPA all along.

Here are Captain Rice's remarks to the Executive Board meeting this past week. Fast forward to 11:45 to see his statement on a mandatory retirement age increase. Notice that he clearly states "...but that is not a solution." It would be his opponent, the pusher of Age 65, who would be more likely to support an increase in the retirement age yet again.

You must have the perfect life. What's the secret cowboy?
There is a few drivers out there who retired before 60 to save what was left of their retirement packages.
Selfish, I think not.
Regardless, retirement would have been increased at some stage due to advances in medical technology.
That's just my ********* talking. *********s are just like opinions, everybody has one.
As far as feeding off the payroll as you put it, it's ironic, pilots ***** about being underpaid in this day and age, but apparently having experience at the top of the ladder is not only unwanted, it is seen as feeding off the system instead working for a living. I'm sure that sitting next to you
is a delight.
You wanted a steady career, should've joined the UAW.
