Former United Airlines chief to launch Indian airline:-
New Delhi | June 16, 2005 8:40:03 PM IST

New Delhi, June 16 : The no-frills airline industry in India may be getting a little crowded with the launch of yet another carrier, this time by Rakesh Gangwal, the former chief executive of United Airlines of the US.

Gangwal is launching the low-cost airline, christened IndiGo, in a joint venture with InterGlobe Enterprises, a leading travel trade company based here.

It is the fourth airline after Air Deccan, Kingfisher Airlines and Spicejet to make an entry into the low-cost airline industry in the country.

The joint venture has committed itself to 100 aircraft of Airbus Industrie's A-320 family of aircraft, an InterGlobe statement said.

"We feel privileged at the prospect of contributing to the growth of India's aviation sector," said Gangwal, who has over 20 years' experience in the global aviation sector.

"IndiGo will serve the nation's air travellers with superior customer service and provide great value for money," Gangwal, who has also worked with US Airways and Air France, added.

"IndiGo is the result of extensive analysis and planning by very experienced airline executives and we are convinced it will be a successful new player in a market that is large and fast-growing," Airbus president Noel Forgeard said.

Gangwal is the second chief executive of a US carrier who has decided to get associated with the Indian aviation sector, after Rono Dutta of US Airways joined Air Sahara as its president.

InterGlobe had recently announced a joint venture with global hospitality sector major Accor to build economy hotels in the Indian subcontinent. The venture has plans for 25 hotels in the first phase.
