Default Southwest To Buy AirTran Airways

NEW YORK (AP) -- Southwest Airlines to buy AirTran for $1.4 billion, in latest sign of industry consolidation.

Just announced on the radio. Didn't see this coming.

Wow! So Southwest will come into ATL now? Definitely some implications for Delta and it's feeder carriers. Wonder how the 2 pilot working groups feel about the merger too?

For Delta this is one of those times that it is good to have fNWA CEO and management. They are experts at defending their hubs... when they want too.

This will push Delta in ATL and hopefully we will actually now "focus on the customer"

I think that it's safe to say that SWA/AirTran will have more ATL service post merger than AirTran does now.

As far as how the pilots feel, the devil is in the detail. We are stepping into the unknown here.

Also means that Southwest is going to be bigger out of MKE.

Not surprised by this at all. I expect a few more players to go after smaller carriers after this announcement as well.

Yeah, DOT will make Delta divest gates/slots in ATL, NYC just to make it fair for Southwest/Airtran... (Sarcasm)
