FAA proposes pilot certificates to include photos US FAA announced Thursday it is proposing that all pilot certificates include photos of the certificate holder, following a requirement that all pilot certificates be “made of plastic and contain security features, such as a hologram and an ultraviolet-sensitive layer, to prevent tampering, altering and counterfeiting.”

Under the new FAA proposal, the new certificates would have a proposed expiration date of eight years.

“Our current certificates are plastic and tamper-resistant, but this proposal will make them even more secure,” said FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt.

If finalized, FAA said the resulting final regulation will fulfill a provision of the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act, which requires FAA to issue plastic, tamper-resistant pilot certificates with photos.

Under the proposal, the cost of the new pilot certificate would be $22 and would have to be renewed every eight years, FAA said. That amount is comparable to drivers’ license fees in many states

Can I use my avatar for my picture?

My question would be how many times have falsesifed credentials been used...now are we going to have to have our lic on display or only on request.

Explain to me how having my picture on my certificate if gonna make me more secure or more safe. I am already required to carry a picture ID in addition to my FAA certs so why the overkill. Making it expire only adds to the headache we know as the government and adds to a little revenue enhancement by charging a fee. I guess this most be another line in the "FAA Harmonization"

Under the old style paper cert, I know of at least 2.
Both of them were at a company I worked for and occurred because HR did not do their jobs.

What were the circumstances?

Requiring a photo on your pilot's license does absolutely nothing to enhance security or making flying any safer. So why require it? It will be a lot of money spent needlessly? Why have a license at all? Your name should be in the FAA's database, and an inspector can look it up.

Beacuse somebody at the faa has to look like they are actually doing something. Makes them feel better.

Not too relevant in 121 since we already use other forms of ID, but this might help out with part 91 security a little. On the off chance that a real bad guy actually wanted a pilot cert, this might make him think twice if he has to physically appear at a federal facility (FSDO) to get his picture taken. Maybe they should run a fingerprint check (not retain our fingerprints, just check them against known bad guys).

Mostly window dressing though. It might help out the DEA a little.

The pilot certificate is more like a diploma, a statement of your qualifications, not identification. It should have no photo, and ESPECIALLY no expiration date.
