Probably means they want more Boeings and are just looking for leverage to beat them up more on price and/or make sure the next gen 73 keeps the fossil overhead panel.

Eh...ya' think? Stranger things have happened, but it looks like SW may be trying to weasel a better deal out of boeing for the re-engined version. Boeing is on the ropes and SW knows it, what better time to hit them with an Airbus sit down.

The story goes that Herb asked Airbus for some lighters prior to negotiating with Boeing for the -700's. He then "accidently" drops one while lighting his smokes. It allowed us to keep the overhead panel the same as the -300. In the interest of truthiness....I made up the part about the overhead panel.

I've heard he did the same things with pens. He would always get a bunch of Airbus pens from their contact there and all the SW execs would have their Airbus pens prominently displayed whenever Boeing was present to try and secure a sale.

It seems there might be some truth in this statement... but I guess it's bound to happen eventually.

I still have to think this is a page from the book of many airlines before: play the competition game to get the airplane you want at the price you want.

Trippe famously did this between Boeing and Douglas....and Pratt and Rolls Royce...etc.

SWA is in such a power position these days that they're smart to use a little of that muscle.

Perhaps they want to make sure that Boeing continues the comfortable cockpit concept that makes the guppy so much fun to sit in for 5 hours straight
