Part-time jobs for full-time pilots
 

I am a new member to the board, but I am asking the million dollar question. Sorry if this has been asked. I am graduating from college soon and have always wanted to be an airline pilot. In today’s industry, the life of a pilot seems very unstable. When I graduate, I will have my flight licenses and a degree in finance. Are there any part time jobs that a full time pilot can do on the side? I have heard a lot about real estate, but does anyone know of anything else? I have a school project coming up where I have to interview a business professional, stock broker, trader, etc.. in a field that I would be interested in. Is it unrealistic to have a side job as a full time pilot?

Thanks for any advice; I am trying to keep all my options open and maybe open up a few new doors.

Air National Guard or Reserve are obvious answers.

Probably the best one I've seen is a guy who was a pilot and a Bartender. Two skill sets that complement each other nicely.

I have been applying to the ANG, but it is incredibly competitive. No luck so far.

Not unrealistic at all - in fact, given the industry I would recommend it.

You mentioned a couple - real estate and loan officer - in fact with the internet, cell phones and laptops both of those could be done while you're on the road. There are a number of other financial service jobs that could start out as "part time" - life/health/disability insurance sales and also with your degree in finance you could look at being a financial planner. There are only a few companies that will let you be a planner when you are part time. Financial planner has been my post 9/11 job for 4 years and I'm not sure if I will go back.

Definitely have something going on the side - you never know what the business will bring you. Also, there are HUGE advantages (writeoffs, etc) to owning your own business.

If you are going to fly domestic, then a part time job is a waste of time because you will be working 21 days a month. However, if you get a long-haul job then you will be working only 12 days a month. I have about 16 days off each month and I have a degree in criminolgy, but i'm too lazy now for a part time job. That is another side effect of too many days off as a long-hauler.
