It is true, but keep in mind there were 950 on the chopping block, this is nothing more than a short reprieve. In reality, I was actually very disappointed by the LOA numbers. I believe 163 took the last one (in 2005), so while 49 is a start, it's not exactly what we had hoped for. Hopefully, more will take it in the future.

How does the UAL furlough mitigation letter work in terms of volunteers? Are the volunteers recalled by the seniority of the furloughee for which they've volunteered?

If so, do you think some guys would wait a little longer to volunteer for furlough [for a more senior furloughee]? This would allow an earlier recall for a volunteer with the ability to bypass until all furloghees are called back....right? I'd guess more pilots will take the voluntary furlough but are waiting to get a more senior number.

It seems like a volunteer would have more options by waiting a bit.

The voluntary furloughees are recalled based on their own senority dates (with bypass rights), but only when United decides to recall. The voluntary furloughees get furlough pay. The pilots that take a voluntary leave of abscence have a firm return date, even if United is not recalling. They do not get furlough pay. They both keep United pass travel priveleges, but not offline.

Might not be a bad deal if you wanted to go to law school or finish up your twenty on active duty for retirement.

"Fuzzy math"?

49+49=98 NO?

That's the way I read it. 49 voluntary furloughs, and an ADDITIONAL 49 LOA's?
Maybe I'll get to stick around another month (or 3?). Just need to the end of the year (or until I get another job).

Actually, I had just been referring to the LOAs, Voluntary Furloughs are quite different because it doesn't lower the OVERALL furlough numbers. I sincerely hope the voluntary furloughs at least keep people (who want to be here) on property longer.

I had mistakenly believed more folks would take the special LOAs, which directly lowers the furlough numbers. I am very happy for those who just got a reprieve but I still feel like a Damocles sword is hanging over my head.

It is actually just the opposite. The LOA does not offset furloughs, at least it does not mention it in the TA. The voluntary furlough does offset furloughs. Here is an except from the TA...

Voluntary furloughs will offset any involuntary furloughs with the same effective date on a one for one basis, on a seniority basis.
