Default Must be nice

I wish I could get $1,000,000.00 a year to run an airline into the ground, I get $22,000 a year to do the opposite, see something wrong here?

I definitely do. This from the same group of individuals who said UAL couldn't make it unless they got rid of hard-earned pensions by the front line employees who are the ones that keep everything working everyday. Criminal!

I yi yi. . . this is what happens when you let corporate greed rule this country. Furthermore, it continues to get worse due to the lack of labor support within the administration.

Sheesh. . . bunch of crooks.

Vodka - nothing takes the edge off my broken / heart and soul...
Four years ago I commissioned in the USAF. What I remember most is Helena not being there. She died in NYC on 9-11 in the south tower.

Helena had some of his LPs / 45s. Is that what they are called? I grew up with CDs. There was a 15 year age difference between us.

Helena, introduced me to carlin, records , vodka, jazz, and sex. We use to make love to Miles Davis albums...She loved having sex while listening to good jazz on a rainy day...I miss her...I lost my virginity listening to miles davis - I can remember the record ending...You know the sound? I remember that and her saying "I was a perfect fit..."

I think about her daily. I never told her I loved her. I was afraid she would break my heart. To this day I can see her face in every jazz song / vodka bottle I drink / rainy day. My wife will never replace her. I spend hours in DC walking around after work hoping I'll run into her.

I met her for the first time in Amsterdam, late 1995, by chance. I had gone to the city for my birthday to see a band called Hole (Courtney Love's band) play a club called the paradiso (its a church the dutch converted into a concert hall....amazing place for a concert...) and had a few hours to kills so I headed down to the red light district for a beer. Met her at the bulldog - she was with girlfriends going thru Europe. We had a few beers and decided to meet later for dinner at Shiva's (Indian restaurant - one of the better ones in Amsterdam)...

I didn't think she would be there. At this point I didn't care. I was hungry and when in Amsterdam I always have Indian food. Dutch food is no good. However, there she was...She had even changed into nice dress and told me she couldn't stop thinking about me.

I told her she was mistaken - I was a horrible person and I don't think I could return the affection she obviously had for me. She didn't seem to care...She told me quite honestly she knew people and deep down I was going to live / die alone. What an odd thing to say...I told her as much...She replied without wasting a second, "by the time I'm finished with you. Nothing will be left except the shell of a man..."

I shrugged my shoulders and ordered food for both of us...She seemed upset I didn't ask her what she wanted...I quickly told her - I could care less for her needs / desires. I called the shots when I paid the bills.

We enjoyed dinner...At least I did , despite the edge a virgin in his early 20s has when sitting near a beautiful woman...I didn't know what would happen next but I had been told you only live once and should live without fear...

I asked her if she had been to Amsterdam before? She hadn't...This was my 9th trip to the city in as many weekends...I decided to show her around what I considered my city. We must have walked for hours...She finally grew tired and asked where I was spending the night...My car- of course. Which I had parked at Zaanvort beach and had taken the metro into the city. It was my habit, I told her, to sleep standing upright in a phone booth till the trains started running again in the morning.

Maybe she felt sorry for me....She kissed me goodnight and wrote in mirror script her phone number in NYC on my forehead...Then she walked away...I spent the night in a phone booth. Then on the beach outside the city. I did put her number in my 'little black book' and decided if I was ever in the US I would call her....

Time passed - I traveled around Europe. Helena always stayed in my mind...I didn't want to call - later she would tell me she stayed by the phone hoping I'd call just to hear my voice...

In 1998 I left Europe for Japan. In 1999 I found my self a full-time student in USA. I decided to call. She answered and told me she was on her way out the door on a date. She didn't know if she would call back - she didn't know how this would end and she had a bad feeling about our relationship...

I couldn't play it cool. I told her I had no armor left. Everything I am , everything I'll ever be is a result of having met her that one night. I didn't care if it didn't work out. For me one more date / dinner was worth risking it all...

I could hear her tell her date to leave. There would be no need for him to return or call again. I guess a part of me should be happy about this...In all honesty , the virgin in me was pleased. The rest of me didn't understand what was happening...

We spent the next few hours talking about everything...I now found myself driving to NYC to met her every weekend. The experience was incredible - mentally and sexually....

But as they say all good things must end...Don't know if it was Al-Queda killing her or our relationship becoming nothing more than a sex fest...I knew it would soon end...I just didn't expect it to without any last words. Despite the hard exterior and weathered features I'm actually a romantic deep down...

I was on my way to class on 9-11 when I heard a small GA plane had flown into the WTC. I didn't think much of it and changed to a local classic rock and enjoyed the door's Peace Frog as I drove to class....

By the time i reached the classroom. I knew something was wrong. I excused myself and called her - no answer , all circuits were busy...

I tried all day. It was only later that I realized she was gone for good.

As they say - she's the one that got away...

I have only one picture of her...Taken that night in Holland almost 10 years ago...Someone took it for me... Neither one of us owned a camera. I only got one after my daughter was born...

Wow LAFF, I don't know what to say. What a touching story, as well as a reminder that we only have one life to live and should do so with gusto. Someone recently sent me an email about how people come into our lives for a reason. Obviously Helena was one of those people. I'm so sorry to hear about your loss.
