JBU Captain restrained, plane diverted
Just caught this on the news:
JetBlue Plane Makes Emergency Landing In Amarillo After Co-Pilot Disrupts Flight « CBS Dallas / Fort Worth
Whatever happened, I hope they can get the guy some treatment and get him back on the line.

Unfortunately, there are already a few different stories about what happened.. and in typical US News Media fashion, it's better to sensationalize the news than just report the facts.
Sounds like (whichever) the pilot was, he may have had a brain type seizure. Having been in a squadron where we had a pilot who had a similar thing happen to him, I can say that I hope it works out ok for this guy. In the case I know of, it was an actual brain tumor that finally tripped the guy into speaking gibberish while at the controls! If you look at YouTube, you'll also see numerous cases of reporters also spazzing out on the air. Scary thing.

A beloved chief pilot -- and there were such creatures many years ago -- was stricken similarly while flying a trip to brush up for an upcoming sim.
He began speaking what may have been Polish (he was of that descent), and randomly reaching for switches on the overhead. Thankfully, his F/O was a check pilot, who had the veteran lead F/A come up and assist in calming and comforting the stricken captain while the flight diverted.
It was indeed a brain tumor that triggered the episode, and after a courageous year-and-a-half battle which included all the painful and difficult treatments, he eventually succumbed to it.

The news media makes me sick. Why don't they just shut up until they have some hard facts. They are already blaming it on PTSD because he was a vet and now some moron is saying they shouldn't hire vets because something like this could happen to any vet.

actually there is no reason to ban JetBlue...JetBlue and fellow coworkers/passengers did an awesome job to keep everyone safe. it could have happened anywhere and does happen in different work environments. also, let's wait to see what actually happened, if he did flip out for what ever reason then his flying days are finished i'm sure. it's a very unfortunate and tragic situation for the captain and family.

Let us get the facts before we crucify the guy on this forum. The human brain is an amazing and complex thing. The news did say the jet diverted for "medical" reasons. Like others have mentioned on this forum, brain tumors, seizures and encephalitis, among other things, can cause erratic behaviors. They can be further exacerbated by the higher cabin altitudes. I remember visiting my father in hospice while he was dying from a brain tumor. He didn't know who I was. He thought I was a business partner from 30 years ago and starting talking about an old business deal from the past as though it was happening then.

Wow, you are certainly well informed about this incident. I guess you know him personally and are getting hourly reports from the hospital. Maybe he did not get the same brain scan that you did when you were interviewed. If after this, the FAA lets him have his medical back, I will ride anywhere with him.
A little compassion and maturity will take you a long way in life.
