All has been good advice, lastly don't forget connecting with ZED fares through HNL if all else fails. Daily flights on HAL from HNL to SYD and three times weekly on Qantas but DAL zeds do not work on JETSTAR flights in the pacific.

Even a mainline DELTA pilot can be bumped if they have not reserved the jumpseat ahead of time, ie walking up to the gate to list. Only JS reservations are considered into the weight and balance release.

Are ZED fares the same as ID90? Do they have to be purchased in advance?

I'm planning on some travel this summer, so this thread is proving useful for general info; don't travel much, for fun.

ZED fares are valid on multiple airlines and routes (in theory) and are priced via zone and type (high, medium, and low). ID90 fares are valid on the airline and citypair that you purchased it for.

Both must be purchased in advance at a ticket counter of the airline you work for (not the airline you wish to fly on), however certain airlines have an e-ticket ZED program that allows you to purchase tickets online. Once you buy the ZED/ID90, you have to list with the carrier you will fly on.

First of all, ZED's are the new standard and it prevents airlines from gaming the system with ID90 which charged 10% of unrestricted coach that could be way more than a going fare on any route may be. Bottom line, ZEDs are standardized and cheaper than the ID90s of the past.

That said, some smaller airlines of the world aren't into the zed system yet. Some are into the E-ZED system which you can buy and refund your tickets right over the internet and when you buy them through EZED, they list you as well.
