Yeah Delta will hire when they need people. I've only worked 7 days this month so I doubt they need anyone right now
Worked more on reserve this month than any other in the past 3 years. Part of that is due to the new reserve rules, part of it is scheduling going ballistic on SCs. Hate that we're going to bump that up another 16% or so with this TA. It appears their intent is to use them (SCs) even if they don't need to from how they're dishing them out this month (the June SC Sheet isn't worth the time it takes to download). As much as I can laugh at how much liberty the MEC is taking with the truth on their TA sell, I don't get how they can say there's not going to be a decrease in GSs...if they could fly some of us even more than they already have do you think they wouldn't with the additional SCs out there? Was there a change in the TA to the order of where trips are assigned when it comes to reserves and GS that I missed? |
If Delta were going to hire, based on this T/A, they would have said so, to help sell it.

I guess I can't complain, but yes I've tripled my monthly average in June. Its been nonstop. when they put 18 people on SC on a clear day it goofs LC up.
They used to assign SCs like a blind man with a sniper rifle. Now they use a flak gun in a crowded room. Its improved a lot with some of the new pcs options though. that i like. |

I believe Steve D. Said just that in the last week and a half in his weekly update.
The ONLY reason they are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on an Early Retirement Program is, they are already over staffed by over 500 pilots, and this T/A, by the MEC's own admission, will create (at least) 300 more surplus positions. The first 717 won't show up for another year from now. They aren't going to start hiring for that -unless- they have to, and it will be next year some time before they do, if they need to at all, after the 'efficiencies' kick in. They HOPE 350 will take the early out, but I have not heard a single senior pilot say, "Oh Goodie! Now I can retire early!" In fact, I have heard several say, "We need to get age 65 overturned so we can stay longer..." I doubt if we will see more than 200 go early, and 90% of those will be former NW's who have a frozen DB plan to retire to. |

If this TA does not pass, however, Delta is only overstaffed by 650 pilots at Comair subsidiary. |

Finally, I know the big question out there on the line as you hear about mainline growth is how that will impact our pilot staffing and whether it will jumpstart pilot hiring. It’s been no secret that we are looking at a wave of pilot retirements over the next few years as pilots begin to approach age 65. Because of that, our pilot hiring group has remained active since we stopped our last round of hiring in 2010, and we are prepared to start the hiring process on short notice. While our hiring is ultimately based on the Network block hour plan, which in turn is affected by the economy, all indications are that the addition of 717s and the opportunity for pilots to take advantage of the Pilot Retirement Medical Account (RMA) early retirement option will accelerate movement across the seniority list and require us to begin hiring earlier than the planned pilot retirements alone would have. If Delta can continue to execute its business plan, including the 717s, and barring an economic downturn or other unanticipated event, we could begin the hiring process as early as the last quarter of this year. |
