AA jumpseat question

Can any AA pilots here answer a question for me?

When I hitch a ride on ya'll, and all the overhead space is gone, it is hard to get my bag accommodated. On Airways, I get a gate valet tag, or, most of the time, I just talk to the crew and throw it in the cockpit or put it in the FA closet. Numerous times I've seen room in the FA closet or in your cockpit (MD-80), but it is never offered, and once i asked an FA to use her closet which had plenty of room, and was refused.

Just wanted to know why I can't get a valet tag or throw my bag in the cockpit or closet. I've always been polite in asking. Any reasons why?

Not sure about the valet tag, that would be a question for the agent.

Cockpit space on the Md80/737 is very tight, it can be done but one of the pilots won't be able to slide their seat back. I personally would find a way - set the bag on the floor under the jumpseat - but I'm probably in the minority. As far as the forward closet goes, the Md80/737 forward closet is used for the cockpit crew bag storage and is usually full already by the time all the overhead bins are full.

I too have always been able to stow my bag in the cockpit of USAir Airbuses but then again, it's a roomy cockpit. Same with us on the 75/76/77 - no prob at all stowing your bag up there, I've done it a bunch for jumpseaters. It just may be too tight on the 80/737.

I'm not an AA pilot, so can't speak to policy, but as a jumpseater I can say that I have had FAs offer closet space on many occasions, and have also been able to put my bag in the cockpit, though most of my AA flights have been on larger (757/767) aircraft.

A buddy of mine commuting from BOS to ORD for work was a non-rev, by the time he boarded all overhead bins were full. Agents made him check his bags, when he arrived in ORD his bags were still sitting on the ramp in BOS. Needless to say he flew back to BOS and called in sick.
Moral of the story, probably won't get much luck from any agents or FA's as they treat their own like crap. Best bet talk to the captain.

My issue is that our agreement with AA is domestic only. *** is up with that?!? AA guys fly on us all the time to South and Central America. At least let us hitchhike over to the Bahamas...

Of course, it is not the pilots' fault. They have much larger fish to fry right now than negotiating international privileges for another pilot group. But it still always irks me...

Which airline do you work for?
I think the reciproca agreementl for int'l jumpseat covers most carriers that fly Int'l.
