International Jumpseats.
Hi All,
I'm planning a trip to Managua, Nicaragua. Are there special requirements for international jumpseats on DAL and UAL? CAL used to require 24 hour in advance international listing for TSA processing. Do DAL, UAL & AMR have similar requirements? Thanks. |
FWIW, walked up and listed on DAL and UAL and US to MAD about 4 hours before departure. Unless you're eagle, you can't go AMR jumpseat.
|
FWIW 2, cant sit in DAL jumpseat unless your DAL either. You would get a seat in the back AFTER all nonrevs.
IMO, would be easier to get a ZED fare ticket. |

Thanks. I'm not sure about CAL, but the times I used them, they had me check in at a service counter. I made sure to do it nice and early, like 2 hours before the go time. |
Thanks for the info guys.
Positive Rate what international cockpits have you jumpseated in? Did you flow back on each jumpseat? DAL is a no go. What about UAL? |

YES, we ALL know the TSA changed their own policy on occupying the JS for international flights, but by the time they get the "master crew list" thing going, all the software/hardware set up in the foreign locations, it'll be YEARS before we see it. |
I would buy a ZED fare ticket for at least the return trip, then try to get the J/S. Also, show up USA outbound at least 60 mins prior for passport check. (check validity vs. expiry date). Upon return to USA I would show at the ticket counter AT LEAST 2 hours prior, as there is usually a massive line at the ticket counter/passport check/ security. If you cant get the JS, you use the ZED ticket. The ZED ticket IS refundable as I've done it before. We just flew GRU-DTW last night, and there was about 50 people in the ticket counter line, 150 people at security and about 200 plus people at passport check. It would take at least an hour and a half to get through that line. FWIW. Enjoy your trip, LA is great!

I flew SFO-FRA on UAL a couple days ago by 'jumpseating.' I checked in at service counter 2.5 hrs early and the agent told me that she couldn't list me until 2 hrs or less before departure.... No big deal, she was very nice and gave me a standby pass no problems. Then, when I got to the gate the agent told me that I wasn't listed on flight even though my name was up on the standby board. I rushed back out to the service counter and after the original agent consulted with somebody with experience working the gate they called down and told the gate that I 'was' listed for the flight. So, back through security where there was a ticket with a seat waiting for me :)
I checked in with the flightdeck and dropped off some treats, they asked if I had been given me an upgrade but I told them that the flight seemed full. I also dropped off some treats with the flight attendants. I sat in an economy seat with no-one next to me. The flight attendants were very nice and made sure I had everything I needed. Everyone was great. Best part is that it cost me zero dollars. I did buy a couple zeds for my return flight and based on the loads I'm going to try LH MUC-SFO tomorrow. I used kayak dot com to look at seats remaining for my flights; the UAL agent actually recommended that technique. Good luck on your travels. |

What's the latest policy for UA? Will the gate give a jumpseater a boarding pass for business class? If the flight loads show Y as oversold, but plenty of open seats in J and F, should I not consider this flight as an option?
What are people's favorite airlines for jumpseating to Europe (with at least a chance of an upgrade)? I'm trying to get to Germany, but I can't find schedules for Kalitta, Atlas or any other ACMI besides Polar. Should I just call their jumpseat phone numbers? |
A huge Thank You to the USAirways crews which made my recent European jump-seating experience perfect.
Their jump-seating policy and procedures top the list. I am optimistic that more U.S. carriers will work on less restrictive jump-seat policies. Jump-seats are one of the few remaining privileges afforded to U.S. pilots, which we owe to the previous generations and union negotiations. |
Does anybody have any experience jumpseating from Madrid, Spain (MAD)??
I'm looking to catch a US Airways flight MAD-PHL next week, but have never jumpseated internationally. I don't have access to ZED, so that's not an option for me. |
AMR guys/gals, I'm planning a trip to Uruguay, (MVD). Is jump seating (with cabin seating available in back) just an early show to counter, pay fees and go? Or is there a listing on website I need to do? Im with B6. Thanks in advance.

From Halle station or Leipzig station you can get almost anywhere. |

LIR - YYZ on the 6th. Just gotta call the jumpseat number to list and pay taxes |
The stupid thing about not riding in the flight deck jumpeat internationally (unless it is your own carrier) is that applies to U.S. airlines only. I know for a fact there are at least two large European airlines that will put non-revs, not just pilots, in flight deck jumpseats to and from the States. I was offered the second jumpseat heading to Europe but got bumped at the last minute by the teenage son of a ramper for the airline. The first jumpseat was occupied by a gate agent. I have also ridden in the flight deck within Europe on a ZED ticket.

I don't know any European carrier that lets you jumpseat for free. With a ZED ticket most carriers will let the Captain decides who sits in the jumpseat , employees, relatives etc., all done at Captains discretion. |
Or a FA jumpseat. Did that once coming back from Iceland.

Can you expand on this? Is there a list of these ACMI carriers? Where can I read up on this? Thx.
Atlas is, pretty sure Kalitta is. However, it can depend on the SPECIFIC customer they are engaged with on the route. If it's a mil charter, pretty sure you can't. |
