International Jumpseats.

Hi All,

I'm planning a trip to Managua, Nicaragua.

Are there special requirements for international jumpseats on DAL and UAL? CAL used to require 24 hour in advance international listing for TSA processing. Do DAL, UAL & AMR have similar requirements?

Thanks.

Positive_Rate 08-10-2012 06:16 AM

FWIW, walked up and listed on DAL and UAL and US to MAD about 4 hours before departure. Unless you're eagle, you can't go AMR jumpseat.

crewdawg52 08-10-2012 07:09 AM

FWIW 2, cant sit in DAL jumpseat unless your DAL either. You would get a seat in the back AFTER all nonrevs.

IMO, would be easier to get a ZED fare ticket.

If you're talking about using the jumpseat privilege to occupy a vacant cabin seat, DAL requires 75 minute check in before the go time to be "passport listed" or whatever they're calling it now days.

I'm not sure about CAL, but the times I used them, they had me check in at a service counter. I made sure to do it nice and early, like 2 hours before the go time.

Thanks for the info guys.

Positive Rate what international cockpits have you jumpseated in? Did you flow back on each jumpseat? DAL is a no go.

What about UAL?

Unless it's one of the ACMI carriers that complies with a certain TSA directive, you WON'T be sitting on the ACTUAL JS on a carrier other than your own for international flights.

YES, we ALL know the TSA changed their own policy on occupying the JS for international flights, but by the time they get the "master crew list" thing going, all the software/hardware set up in the foreign locations, it'll be YEARS before we see it.

I would buy a ZED fare ticket for at least the return trip, then try to get the J/S. Also, show up USA outbound at least 60 mins prior for passport check. (check validity vs. expiry date). Upon return to USA I would show at the ticket counter AT LEAST 2 hours prior, as there is usually a massive line at the ticket counter/passport check/ security. If you cant get the JS, you use the ZED ticket. The ZED ticket IS refundable as I've done it before. We just flew GRU-DTW last night, and there was about 50 people in the ticket counter line, 150 people at security and about 200 plus people at passport check. It would take at least an hour and a half to get through that line. FWIW. Enjoy your trip, LA is great!

I flew SFO-FRA on UAL a couple days ago by 'jumpseating.' I checked in at service counter 2.5 hrs early and the agent told me that she couldn't list me until 2 hrs or less before departure.... No big deal, she was very nice and gave me a standby pass no problems. Then, when I got to the gate the agent told me that I wasn't listed on flight even though my name was up on the standby board. I rushed back out to the service counter and after the original agent consulted with somebody with experience working the gate they called down and told the gate that I 'was' listed for the flight. So, back through security where there was a ticket with a seat waiting for me :)

I checked in with the flightdeck and dropped off some treats, they asked if I had been given me an upgrade but I told them that the flight seemed full. I also dropped off some treats with the flight attendants. I sat in an economy seat with no-one next to me. The flight attendants were very nice and made sure I had everything I needed. Everyone was great. Best part is that it cost me zero dollars.

I did buy a couple zeds for my return flight and based on the loads I'm going to try LH MUC-SFO tomorrow. I used kayak dot com to look at seats remaining for my flights; the UAL agent actually recommended that technique.

Good luck on your travels.

This. Not sitting in the actual jumpseat. Just using it to grab a seat in the back.

What's the latest policy for UA? Will the gate give a jumpseater a boarding pass for business class? If the flight loads show Y as oversold, but plenty of open seats in J and F, should I not consider this flight as an option?

What are people's favorite airlines for jumpseating to Europe (with at least a chance of an upgrade)? I'm trying to get to Germany, but I can't find schedules for Kalitta, Atlas or any other ACMI besides Polar. Should I just call their jumpseat phone numbers?

A huge Thank You to the USAirways crews which made my recent European jump-seating experience perfect.
Their jump-seating policy and procedures top the list.
I am optimistic that more U.S. carriers will work on less restrictive jump-seat policies.

Jump-seats are one of the few remaining privileges afforded to U.S. pilots, which we owe to the previous generations and union negotiations.

amiskwia 10-13-2012 09:07 PM

Does anybody have any experience jumpseating from Madrid, Spain (MAD)??
I'm looking to catch a US Airways flight MAD-PHL next week, but have never jumpseated internationally.
I don't have access to ZED, so that's not an option for me.

AMR guys/gals, I'm planning a trip to Uruguay, (MVD). Is jump seating (with cabin seating available in back) just an early show to counter, pay fees and go? Or is there a listing on website I need to do? Im with B6. Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, JetBlue is not on American's international jumpseat list, which means that you are only eligible to travel D6 (offline jumpseater priority) on domestic flights. Very few airlines are granted international D6 privileges on American. For those that are approved, listing is completed through the same website used to list for domestic flights.

p1ayn 10-21-2012 07:29 AM

Ok Thanks for that information, definitely helps..:) Will purchase the interline agreement tickets.

Kalitta website posts a schedule. It is close to schedule, we go to Liepzig (EDDP) almost daily from CVG and most days from JFK or EWR. 24 hours ahead and you will have two meals all first class seats and even possibly a bunk to sleep in.
From Halle station or Leipzig station you can get almost anywhere.

within 1 day of trying to get back from Rio, I looked at DL and CO, I went for CO last minute, showed up at the airport maybe 2 hours before, went to the service desk, like most Int'l airports, and showed my ID and paid the Int'l fee, about $40 US I think, happen to see the crew inside of security at a snack bar and introduced myself, positive experience all around, GIG-IAH.

I always: 1) saved the inbound pprwork or 2) try to 'list' while in the States for the return flt. You never know if you will be able to explain "J/S" in an international location. Have fun.

Not sure why I keep seen the Neosporin ads in here, maybe is a sign? Anyway guys I really.need your help I'm stuck in SJO(or LIR) and need to get out today, I couldnt find anything on the Polar side, is anybody able to check Atlas? Or any other suggestions? All flights have been oversold for the past 2 days and with the weather moving through up North the have also cancelled some flights.

And, the last time I was flying the line, I flew though real clouds and such. It was cool.

I dunno who you work for but if it is basically any US carrier besides AA you can JS on Air Canada.

LIR - YYZ on the 6th.

Just gotta call the jumpseat number to list and pay taxes

The stupid thing about not riding in the flight deck jumpeat internationally (unless it is your own carrier) is that applies to U.S. airlines only. I know for a fact there are at least two large European airlines that will put non-revs, not just pilots, in flight deck jumpseats to and from the States. I was offered the second jumpseat heading to Europe but got bumped at the last minute by the teenage son of a ramper for the airline. The first jumpseat was occupied by a gate agent. I have also ridden in the flight deck within Europe on a ZED ticket.

Iberia extended their jump seat to me when I was with Ryanair. Great bunch of people!

Key word being ZED ticket.
I don't know any European carrier that lets you jumpseat for free.
With a ZED ticket most carriers will let the Captain decides who sits in the jumpseat , employees, relatives etc., all done at Captains discretion.

Starscream 01-08-2014 06:22 AM

Or a FA jumpseat. Did that once coming back from Iceland.

Can you expand on this? Is there a list of these ACMI carriers? Where can I read up on this? Thx.

Yes, you do have to have a ZED ticket. But the fact that any employee or their dependent/parent can occupy the flight deck jumpseat while traveling to and from the United States is proof the restriction U.S. carriers have is just plain stupid. We, as pilots, are totally known entities to the United States government. We have passed background checks and are handed the controls of large airliners. They know who we are, were we are from, and what we do for a living and totally trust us to do our jobs. That they prevent us from occupying the flight deck jumpseat on a U.S. airline when crossing the U.S. border, but will allow foreign airlines to have any Tom, Dick and Harry occupying the jumpseat should have us up in arms.

Email your JS rep and see which ones are compliant.

Atlas is, pretty sure Kalitta is. However, it can depend on the SPECIFIC customer they are engaged with on the route. If it's a mil charter, pretty sure you can't.

Ok. I read it backwards. I read it as if you work for one of these ACMI carriers, you can occupy the JS on an intl flight on mainline ( if you have an agreement obviously). Thx.
